Tiger salamanders are opportunistic carnivores whose dietary requirements in captivity closely mirror their wild feeding behaviors. In their natural habitat across much of North America, these robust amphibians consume a wide range of invertebrates, small vertebrates, and even larval amphibians. Replicating this nutritional diversity in a captive setting is one of the most important responsibilities a keeper undertakes, because poor diet is the single most common driver of metabolic disease and shortened lifespan in captive Ambystoma tigrinum.
The foundation of a captive tiger salamander diet should be whole prey items that provide complete nutritional profiles, including muscle tissue, fat, exoskeleton or bone, and organ content. Unlike reptiles that may accept prepared commercial pellets as a staple, tiger salamanders are hardwired to respond to movement. Most individuals will refuse any food item that does not move or at least appear freshly killed, which means keepers must maintain reliable access to live feeder insects and, in some cases, small vertebrate prey.
Feeding frequency varies considerably with age, temperature, and season. Juvenile tiger salamanders that are still growing rapidly may require feeding every one to two days, while healthy adults typically do well on a schedule of two to three feedings per week. Overfeeding is a genuine concern with this species because tiger salamanders are enthusiastic eaters that will gorge themselves beyond metabolic need, leading to obesity and hepatic lipidosis over time. Monitoring body condition by observing the width of the tail base relative to the head is a practical method for gauging whether an individual is being overfed or underfed.
Seasonal appetite fluctuations are normal and should be expected. Tiger salamanders kept at cooler temperatures during the winter months will naturally reduce their food intake, sometimes refusing food entirely for several weeks. This brumation-related fasting is not a cause for concern provided the animal entered the cool period in good body condition. Forcing food on a salamander during this phase can lead to gastrointestinal problems because the digestive system slows significantly at lower temperatures.
