A master test kit that bundles ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, and general hardness tests into a single package offers the best value for keepers who test regularly. Testing should be performed at minimum once per week under normal conditions, and daily during the initial cycling period of a new enclosure or after any disruption to the biological filter such as a power outage, medication treatment, or major water change. Keeping a written log of all test results with dates creates a historical record that reveals trends in water quality over time and helps the keeper anticipate problems before they reach levels that endanger the toad.
Total dissolved solids meters and conductivity meters provide a quick, single-number snapshot of overall water mineral content that complements the more detailed chemical parameter testing performed with reagent kits. These electronic instruments are particularly useful for verifying that replacement water prepared from a reverse-osmosis system or mineral reconstitution formula matches the target mineral profile of the enclosure. A significant discrepancy between the conductivity of the replacement water and the existing tank water indicates a chemistry mismatch that should be corrected before the water change proceeds.
KH and GH test kits measure carbonate hardness and general hardness respectively, two parameters that influence pH stability and overall water mineral balance. While less frequently discussed than ammonia or nitrate in beginner-level aquarium resources, these hardness values are critically important for amphibian husbandry. Low carbonate hardness provides insufficient buffering against pH swings, which can cause rapid and potentially fatal shifts in water acidity during the interval between water changes. Keeping these test reagents on hand and checking hardness values at least monthly ensures that the water's buffering capacity remains within the safe range for Surinam Toads.
