Spiny lizards belong to the genus Sceloporus, a large and diverse group of phrynosomatid lizards whose wild diet consists almost entirely of arthropods. In arid scrublands, rocky outcrops, and open woodlands across western North America, these lizards spend their active daylight hours hunting ants, beetles, grasshoppers, spiders, and caterpillars. Replicating this insectivorous diet in captivity is the single most important husbandry decision a keeper makes, because nutritional deficiencies develop quickly in small-bodied ectotherms and are often irreversible by the time clinical signs appear.
The foundation of a captive spiny lizard diet is a rotating selection of commercially raised feeder insects. Crickets, dubia roaches, black soldier fly larvae, and small mealworms form the core rotation, with occasional additions of waxworms, silkworms, and hornworms for variety. The key principle is diversity: no single feeder species provides a complete nutritional profile, so relying exclusively on one type invites imbalances. Crickets, for example, are high in protein but poor in calcium, while black soldier fly larvae offer a far more favorable calcium-to-phosphorus ratio but lack the motility that triggers a strong feeding response in visually oriented hunters.
Feeding frequency varies with age and reproductive status. Juveniles under six months of age should be offered appropriately sized insects daily, as their rapid growth demands consistent protein and mineral intake. Subadults transitioning out of the juvenile growth phase can be fed every other day, and most healthy adults maintain excellent body condition on four to five feeding sessions per week. Gravid females require a return to daily feeding, along with increased calcium supplementation, to support follicle development and shell mineralization.
Portion size is governed by a straightforward rule: each insect offered should be no longer than the distance between the lizard's eyes. Oversized prey items pose an impaction risk and can injure the esophagus or stomach lining. A typical feeding session for an adult spiny lizard involves five to eight appropriately sized insects, though individual appetites vary with ambient temperature, season, and the lizard's overall metabolic state. Keepers should observe feeding behavior closely during the first few weeks of ownership to establish a reliable baseline.
