Waxworms and butterworms are soft, popular, and eagerly taken, but they are high in fat and are best reserved as an occasional indulgence rather than a regular item. They are also handy for tempting a skink that has gone briefly off its food.

Hornworms and silkworms sit at the healthier end of the treat spectrum. They are soft-bodied, hydrating, and lower in fat, which makes them excellent rotation items and a good choice when you want variety without the fat load of waxworms. Their main drawback is cost and a shorter window of usable size before they outgrow a small skink.

Earthworms are an underrated and very natural option, since wild skinks readily take soft-bodied prey from the soil. Clean, sourced earthworms add moisture and a different nutritional profile. Larger adult skinks may also occasionally accept a small pre-killed pinkie as a rare protein boost, though this is far from necessary and should never become routine.

A little plant matter rounds out the picture. Fire skinks are not strict insectivores in the strictest sense and will sometimes nibble soft fruit or vegetation, so a small offering of safe fruit now and then can be a harmless source of variety. Foods to Avoid

Wild-caught insects are the single biggest hazard to avoid.
