In the wild, Scincus scincus feeds on a range of desert-dwelling arthropods, including beetles, beetle larvae, scorpions, and various other invertebrates it encounters while burrowing through loose sand. This evolutionary background means that captive sandfish skinks thrive on a diet composed almost entirely of live invertebrate prey, and keepers should approach nutrition with the goal of replicating the diversity and nutrient profile that wild foraging provides.
A common mistake among new sandfish skink keepers is offering too narrow a selection of feeder insects. Relying on a single prey species, even a nutritious one, leads to nutritional imbalances over time. The ideal feeding regimen rotates between at least three or four different feeder species on a weekly basis. This rotation provides varied amino acid profiles, different fat-to-protein ratios, and a broader spectrum of micronutrients. Variety also stimulates natural foraging instincts, since sandfish skinks in the wild encounter prey of different sizes, textures, and movement patterns.
Feeding frequency for adult sandfish skinks generally falls in the range of every two to three days, with each session consisting of three to six appropriately sized prey items. Juveniles require more frequent feeding, typically every day or every other day, to support their rapid growth. Prey items should be no wider than the distance between the skink's eyes, a standard reptile feeding guideline that helps prevent choking and impaction. Overfeeding is a genuine risk with sandfish skinks, as obesity in captive lizards can lead to hepatic lipidosis and shortened lifespan.
Because sandfish skinks are burrowing animals that spend much of their time beneath the substrate surface, feeding strategies need to account for this behavior. Simply dropping insects on top of the sand may result in feeders escaping or burrowing into substrate corners where they can stress the skink or die and decompose unseen. Many experienced keepers use shallow feeding dishes or tong-feed to ensure that each prey item is consumed and accounted for. This level of attention to feeding mechanics is essential for maintaining accurate intake records and preventing problems.
