The Red-Eyed Leaf Frog is an obligate insectivore, meaning its entire nutritional intake in captivity depends on the quality and variety of live feeder insects offered. Unlike many reptile species that accept prepared diets or frozen prey, Agalychnis callidryas relies almost exclusively on moving, live invertebrates to trigger its feeding response. This makes the selection of commercially available feeder insects one of the most consequential decisions a keeper will make. Choosing the right combination of species, sizes, and suppliers directly impacts the frog's body condition, coloration, and long-term reproductive health.
Crickets remain the dietary backbone for most Red-Eyed Leaf Frog collections. Domesticated house crickets (Acheta domesticus) and banded crickets (Gryllodes sigillatus) are widely available in sizes ranging from pinhead nymphs to three-quarter-inch adults. For adult Red-Eyed Leaf Frogs, crickets measuring roughly half an inch to three-quarters of an inch strike the ideal balance between nutritional payload and safe ingestion. Crickets smaller than this are appropriate for recently metamorphosed froglets. Commercially bred crickets from reputable suppliers tend to be cleaner and carry fewer parasites than those sourced from bait shops, which are often raised on less controlled substrates and may harbor pathogens.
Fruit flies represent another staple, particularly for juvenile frogs and smaller adult females. Flightless and wingless strains of Drosophila hydei and Drosophila melanogaster are sold in ready-to-use culture cups by numerous specialty retailers. D. hydei is the larger of the two species and is generally preferred for sub-adult and adult frogs because it offers a more substantial meal per fly. D. melanogaster cultures, being smaller and faster to reproduce, are better suited for recently metamorphosed froglets that cannot yet handle larger prey. Maintaining a rotation of two to three active cultures at different stages ensures a continuous supply without gaps.
Beyond crickets and fruit flies, offering supplementary feeder species adds nutritional breadth that no single insect can provide. Small roaches such as juvenile Dubia roaches (Blaptica dubia) or Turkish roaches (Shelfordella lateralis) introduce a different amino acid and fat profile. Waxworm moths, offered sparingly, provide a high-energy treat that can help underweight frogs recover condition. Occasionally, small silkworms or phoenix worms (black soldier fly larvae) can be introduced for their favorable calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. The goal is to simulate, as closely as possible, the diverse invertebrate diet these frogs exploit across the Central American rainforest canopy.
When purchasing feeder insects, consistency of supply matters as much as species selection. Subscription-based feeder delivery services have become increasingly reliable, shipping live insects on a weekly or biweekly schedule in insulated packaging. These services typically allow keepers to customize species, size, and quantity per shipment, reducing waste and ensuring freshness. Keepers who prefer to purchase locally should inspect feeders at the point of sale for signs of die-off, mold, or dehydration, all of which indicate poor husbandry at the supplier level and may introduce disease into the vivarium.
