Providing clean, accessible water is a foundational aspect of Rankin's Dragon care, yet the selection of an appropriate water dish is more nuanced than it might initially appear. Rankin's Dragons are arid-adapted lizards that do not always recognize standing water as a drinking source. In the wild, Pogona henrylawsoni obtains much of its moisture from food and from droplets of dew or rain collected on surfaces. This means that the water dish in a captive setup must be designed and placed thoughtfully to maximize the chances that the dragon will drink from it.
Shallow, wide-bottomed dishes made from ceramic or natural stone are the best general-purpose option. The dish should be heavy enough that the dragon cannot flip it during exploration and shallow enough that the water level does not exceed the dragon's chin height when the animal is standing in a relaxed posture. A drowning risk exists if the water is deep enough for a small or juvenile dragon to become submerged and unable to right itself, so depth control is a genuine safety consideration rather than an overcautious formality.
Textured ramp-style water dishes are a newer product category that addresses the recognition problem. These dishes feature a gradual slope from the rim down to a shallow water pool, allowing the dragon to approach the water at ground level and wade into it gradually. The textured ramp surface prevents slipping and mimics the natural experience of approaching a shallow puddle in the wild. Some keepers report that dragons that previously ignored conventional dishes begin drinking regularly once switched to a ramp-style design.
Dripper systems and drip walls provide moving water, which is inherently more attractive to many reptiles than still water in a dish. A simple dripper can be constructed from an inverted water bottle with a pinhole in the cap, positioned so that drops fall onto a leaf or rock surface and collect in a dish below. The movement and sound of falling droplets draw the dragon's attention and trigger a drinking response. Commercial drip systems with adjustable flow rates are available, though they require management to prevent excess humidity accumulation in the enclosure.
Regardless of the dish style selected, water must be changed daily. Reptile water dishes are prone to contamination from substrate particles, shed skin, fecal matter, and uneaten food debris. Biofilm, a slimy bacterial layer that forms on dish surfaces, develops rapidly in warm enclosure environments and must be scrubbed away during daily water changes. Having two identical water dishes allows the keeper to rotate them, placing one in the enclosure while the other is being cleaned and dried, ensuring continuous access to clean water.
