The Peach-Throat Monitor is an obligate carnivore whose wild diet consists primarily of insects, small vertebrates, bird eggs, and the occasional crustacean found in the riparian forests of New Guinea. Replicating this dietary breadth in captivity requires a deliberate selection of commercially available prey items that span multiple protein profiles. Unlike herbivorous or omnivorous reptiles, Varanus jobiensis cannot derive meaningful nutrition from plant matter, so every feeding opportunity must deliver animal-based protein with appropriate fat content.
Whole prey items form the nutritional backbone of a well-managed Peach-Throat Monitor diet. Frozen-thawed mice and rat pups are widely available from commercial reptile prey suppliers and offer an excellent calcium-to-phosphorus ratio when consumed whole, including the skeletal system and organ tissue. For juvenile monitors under 18 inches in total length, pinky mice and fuzzy mice are appropriately sized. Sub-adult and adult specimens can graduate to adult mice and small rat pups, though prey items should never exceed the width of the monitor's head to prevent regurgitation or esophageal injury.
Day-old chicks, sometimes marketed as day-old quail, provide another valuable whole-prey option. These items are rich in amino acids and contain soft, easily digestible bones that contribute to the animal's calcium intake without requiring additional supplementation on those particular feeding days. Many experienced keepers rotate between rodent prey and avian prey on a weekly schedule to avoid nutritional monotony and to encourage natural foraging behaviors, since the scent profiles of different prey species stimulate different predatory responses in monitors.
For keepers who prefer to minimize vertebrate prey, commercially bred feeder fish such as guppies and mollies can be offered in a shallow water dish, tapping into the semi-aquatic feeding instincts of Varanus jobiensis. However, fish should never serve as a dietary staple. Certain freshwater species contain thiaminase, an enzyme that degrades vitamin B1 and can cause severe neurological symptoms over time. Feeder fish are best used as an occasional enrichment item, offered no more than once every two weeks, and sourced from reputable breeders who raise their stock on controlled diets.
