Savannah monitors are carnivores adapted to a savanna environment where the bulk of their natural diet is invertebrates such as beetles, roaches, snails, millipedes, and other arthropods, supplemented occasionally by small vertebrates and eggs. This is the single most misunderstood aspect of their care. Many keepers assume a large lizard needs a rodent-heavy diet, but a steady diet of mice and rats leads to rapid, dangerous obesity and fatty liver disease, which is among the leading causes of premature death in captive savannahs.

A proper captive diet leans heavily on lean, high-protein invertebrates with relatively low fat content. The goal is to replicate the calorie profile of wild foraging, where a monitor expends real energy hunting and eats prey far leaner than a domestic feeder rodent. Building a varied insect-based menu is the foundation of long-term health.

Calcium and phosphorus balance matters as much as protein. Insects are naturally calcium-poor and phosphorus-rich, so without supplementation a growing monitor can develop metabolic bone disease. The products you choose, including feeders, supplements, and the foods you gut-load those feeders with, work together as a system rather than in isolation.

What to Look For

When sourcing feeder insects, prioritize freshness, appropriate size, and a reputable supplier with healthy, well-kept stock. Insects should be lively and free of mold, mites, or die-off in the container. Size matters for safety: a useful rule is that prey should be no wider than the space between the monitor's eyes to reduce any risk of impaction or choking.

Look for feeders that can be gut-loaded, meaning fed a nutritious diet for 24 to 48 hours before being offered, because the insect becomes a delivery vehicle for nutrients. Products marketed as complete gut-load diets vary widely in quality, so check that they emphasize calcium and avoid excessive fat or fillers.

For any frozen-thawed vertebrate prey you do offer sparingly, look for sources that store and ship properly frozen, with no signs of freezer burn or repeated thawing. Quality and traceability reduce the risk of parasites and pathogens reaching your animal.

Live & Whole Prey

Live and whole invertebrate prey should form the backbone of a savannah monitor's diet. Dubia roaches are a popular staple because they are high in protein, relatively low in fat, easy to keep, and cannot climb smooth surfaces or infest a home the way crickets can. Other strong options include locusts, black soldier fly larvae, hornworms, and earthworms, each bringing a slightly different nutrient profile.

Variety is the goal. Rotating several feeder types prevents nutritional gaps and keeps mealtimes interesting, which supports natural foraging behavior. Hard-shelled prey such as captive-bred, parasite-free snails can be excellent for a species evolved to crush shells, but wild-caught invertebrates should generally be avoided due to pesticide and parasite risks.

Whole prey items provide bone, organ, and shell content that muscle meat alone cannot. This is why whole insects and the occasional whole prey item are nutritionally superior to processed meat. The chewing and crushing involved also provide natural enrichment and jaw exercise.

Commercial & Prepared Foods

A growing category of commercial reptile diets aims to provide balanced nutrition in a convenient form, including formulated carnivore gels, freeze-dried insect blends, and canned invertebrate products. These can be useful as occasional supplements or for keepers who cannot always source fresh live feeders, but they should not fully replace live or whole prey for a species this active and intelligent.

When evaluating prepared foods, read the ingredient panel critically. Look for recognizable protein sources high on the list, sensible calcium content, and the absence of excessive grain fillers, sugars, or artificial additives. Products designed specifically for insectivorous or carnivorous monitors are preferable to generic reptile blends.

Acceptance varies by individual. Some monitors readily take prepared diets, especially if introduced young, while others ignore anything that does not move. Prepared foods are best treated as a backup or a vehicle for supplementation rather than the centerpiece of the diet.

Supplements & Gut-Loading

Calcium supplementation is non-negotiable for insect-fed monitors. A plain calcium powder without added phosphorus is typically dusted onto feeders at most feedings for growing animals, with frequency tapering as the monitor matures. A separate calcium product with vitamin D3 is used less frequently, and the exact schedule depends on the UVB lighting in the enclosure.

A balanced multivitamin product rounds out the program, supplying vitamin A and trace nutrients that gut-loading alone may not cover. Over-supplementation carries its own risks, so look for products with clear dosing guidance rather than guessing. The two pillars of dusting and gut-loading work together: gut-loading enriches the insect internally while dusting coats it externally.

Gut-load products and fresh produce given to feeders 24 to 48 hours before feeding meaningfully raise the nutritional value of the prey. High-calcium gut-loads are widely available and are a simple, high-impact upgrade to any feeding routine.

Foods to Avoid

The single most important food to limit is fatty rodent prey. While an adult savannah may take the occasional appropriately sized rodent, a rodent-based diet drives obesity, fatty liver disease, and shortened lifespan. Treat rodents as a rare item, not a staple, and watch the monitor's body condition closely.

Avoid processed meats intended for humans, such as ground beef, lunch meat, or anything seasoned, salted, or cooked. These lack the calcium and whole-prey nutrition a monitor needs and introduce fat and sodium their bodies are not built to process. Dog and cat food is similarly inappropriate as anything more than a rare emergency item.

Wild-caught insects carry pesticide and parasite risks and are best avoided unless you are certain of their source. Fireflies and other toxic invertebrates can be fatal. Likewise, avoid prey that is too large, as oversized items raise the risk of impaction or regurgitation.

Feeding Schedule

Feeding frequency changes dramatically with age. Hatchlings and juveniles are growing rapidly and can be fed daily or near-daily on appropriately sized, calcium-dusted insects. As the monitor matures, frequency drops to every other day and then to a few times per week for adults, with portion size and body condition guiding adjustments.

Monitoring body condition is the real schedule. A healthy savannah is muscular and active, not bloated, with no rolls of fat at the base of the tail or limbs. Because these lizards are intelligent and food-motivated, they will often beg or appear hungry even when well-fed, so the keeper must use observation rather than the animal's enthusiasm to set portions.

Enrichment-based feeding, such as scattering insects in deep substrate or hiding prey to encourage digging and foraging, extends mealtime, provides exercise, and reduces the boredom and obesity that come from simply dropping food in a bowl. This turns feeding into both nutrition and mental stimulation.
