Although Long-Tailed Lizards obtain most of their drinking water by licking droplets from foliage and enclosure surfaces, a shallow water dish remains a valuable accessory that contributes to ambient humidity and serves as an emergency hydration source. The dish should be small enough to fit unobtrusively among the enclosure furnishings and shallow enough that the lizard cannot submerge itself and risk drowning. A water depth of no more than half an inch is appropriate for adult Long-Tailed Lizards, and even less for juveniles. Ceramic dishes are preferable to plastic because they are heavier and less likely to be tipped over by the lizard's movements, and their porous surface can be sanitized effectively in a dilute disinfectant solution during weekly cleanings.
Naturalistic water dishes designed to resemble stone pools or rock formations blend aesthetically into a planted terrarium and provide a drinking surface that looks less artificial than a standard bowl. Many of these products feature a gently sloped entry ramp, which allows the lizard to approach the water's edge gradually rather than having to peer over a vertical rim, reducing the hesitancy that some Long-Tailed Lizards display toward unfamiliar water sources. Some naturalistic dishes include a textured interior surface that gives small feeder insects enough traction to climb out, preventing accidental drowning of crickets or fruit flies that wander into the water.
Humidity trays, which are broad, shallow containers filled with damp sphagnum moss or hydrated expanded clay balls, can be placed on the enclosure floor to create a localized zone of elevated humidity. This is particularly useful in setups where the ambient humidity tends to drop below the sixty-percent minimum recommended for Long-Tailed Lizards. Positioning a humidity tray near the cool end of the enclosure, away from the heat of the basking bulb, maximizes its moisture output by preventing rapid evaporation. The sphagnum moss within the tray should be kept damp but not saturated, and replaced every two to three weeks to prevent it from decomposing and harboring mold or bacteria.
Misting nozzles and spray bottle attachments are companion accessories that enhance the effectiveness of daily misting routines. A quality spray bottle with an adjustable nozzle that can produce a fine mist rather than a concentrated stream distributes water more evenly across plant surfaces and enclosure walls, creating a larger number of small droplets for the lizard to drink from. Dedicated reptile misting bottles are sometimes constructed with a longer trigger handle or a pump pressurization mechanism that reduces hand fatigue during extended misting sessions across multiple enclosures.
