Every heating device, whether a ceramic heat emitter, radiant heat panel, heat cable, or heat mat, must be connected to a thermostat that continuously monitors the temperature at the gecko's level and modulates power to the heater to maintain the target range. Running a heating element without thermostat control is one of the most dangerous practices in reptile keeping and has been responsible for countless animal deaths from thermal burns and heat stroke. For a species like Rhacodactylus leachianus, which is adapted to mild subtropical temperatures and begins to experience physiological stress above 85 degrees Fahrenheit, thermostat control is especially non-negotiable.
Thermostats used in reptile husbandry fall into three primary categories: on-off, pulse-proportional, and dimming or proportional. On-off thermostats are the simplest and least expensive, cutting power to the heater entirely when the temperature probe reads above the setpoint and restoring power when it drops below. This creates a sawtooth temperature pattern that oscillates around the setpoint, with the magnitude of the oscillation depending on the heater's wattage and the enclosure's thermal mass. For Leachianus Gecko enclosures, which operate within a relatively narrow acceptable temperature range, on-off thermostats may produce temperature swings that are wider than ideal, though they remain a functional entry-level option.
Pulse-proportional thermostats offer superior temperature stability by rapidly cycling the heater on and off in short pulses, effectively delivering a variable average power output that closely matches the enclosure's heat loss rate. As the temperature approaches the setpoint, the on-pulses become shorter and the off-pulses become longer, resulting in a nearly flat temperature profile with minimal oscillation. Dimming thermostats, also called proportional thermostats, continuously vary the voltage supplied to the heater rather than pulsing it on and off. This approach produces the smoothest temperature control and is particularly well-suited for use with light-emitting heat sources such as incandescent bulbs and halogen flood lamps, where pulse-proportional control would cause visible flickering. For ceramic heat emitters and radiant heat panels, which produce no visible light, dimming and pulse-proportional thermostats deliver functionally equivalent temperature stability. Thermostat probe placement is as important as the thermostat unit itself. The probe should be positioned at the location where the gecko rests in the warm zone of the enclosure, which for arboreal species like leachies is typically in the upper third of the habitat near the primary basking or resting site beneath the heat source. Securing the probe with suction cups, zip ties, or probe holders prevents it from being dislodged by the gecko's movement, which could cause the probe to fall to the cooler enclosure floor and trigger the heater to overfire as it attempts to bring the distant probe up to setpoint. Some keepers run a secondary thermometer or data logger probe at a different location in the enclosure to verify that the thermal gradient is performing as expected and to provide an independent cross-check on the thermostat's accuracy.
