In the wild, Hemidactylus frenatus obtains the majority of its drinking water by lapping droplets from walls, leaves, and other surfaces that collect condensation or rain. This behavior is deeply ingrained, and many captive house geckos will ignore a standing water dish entirely, drinking only from misted surfaces. A comprehensive hydration strategy therefore combines standing water availability with misting-based delivery to accommodate individual preferences and ensure no gecko goes without.
Small, shallow water dishes designed for reptiles remain a useful component of the hydration system despite the house gecko's preference for droplet drinking. A dish provides a constant water source that the gecko can access at any time, including periods between misting sessions when wall droplets have evaporated. The dish should be shallow enough that even a juvenile gecko cannot submerge and drown, with a water depth of no more than one-quarter inch for adults. Ceramic and glass dishes are preferable to plastic because they are heavier, resist tipping, and do not scratch or stain as readily. Dishes should be cleaned and refilled with fresh dechlorinated water daily to prevent bacterial biofilm formation.

The falling droplets create movement that catches the gecko's attention and triggers the drinking response more reliably than static water. The dripping action also creates a localized area of elevated humidity beneath the drip point. Drip systems require a collection dish or drainage setup at the bottom to prevent water accumulation, and the reservoir must be refilled and cleaned regularly.
Water quality is a frequently overlooked aspect of gecko hydration that directly affects long-term health. Municipal tap water typically contains chlorine or chloramines added during treatment, both of which can irritate reptile mucous membranes and accumulate in body tissues over time. Hard water with high mineral content leaves calcium carbonate deposits on glass surfaces and can create a chalky film on the gecko's skin. The best options for reptile hydration are water treated with a reptile-safe dechlorinator, water filtered through a reverse-osmosis system, or spring water with a known mineral profile. Distilled water is not recommended as a sole water source because it lacks the trace minerals that contribute to electrolyte balance.
Water additives marketed for reptiles include electrolyte supplements, calcium drops, and vitamin-infused solutions that claim to enhance hydration and deliver micronutrients through drinking water. These products have limited proven efficacy for house geckos, and the actual dosage consumed depends entirely on how much water the gecko drinks, which varies unpredictably. Calcium drops in drinking water can precipitate out of solution and foul the water if overused. Electrolyte supplements designed for reptile rehydration therapy can be useful for recovering dehydrated geckos under veterinary guidance but are unnecessary for healthy animals maintained under proper humidity conditions. Clean, dechlorinated water without additives remains the standard recommendation for routine hydration.
