Water quality is the foundation of Hellbender health, and the supplies used to condition, treat, and maintain enclosure water are among the most frequently used accessories in the keeper's inventory. Dechlorination is the first and most essential step: municipal tap water contains chlorine and chloramine at concentrations that are acutely toxic to amphibians, damaging the permeable skin through which Hellbenders conduct gas exchange and absorb water. A high-quality liquid dechlorinator formulated for aquarium use should be on hand at all times and applied to every gallon of water before it enters the tank.
Choose a dechlorinator that neutralizes both chlorine and chloramine, as many municipal water systems have transitioned to chloramine, which is more stable and not removed by simple aging or aeration. Products that also bind heavy metals provide an additional safety margin, particularly in areas with older plumbing infrastructure where copper and lead may be present at low levels. Avoid dechlorinators that contain aloe vera or other organic additives marketed as skin protectants for fish, as these can promote bacterial growth in the cool, low-flow zones of a Hellbender enclosure.
Buffering compounds may be necessary in regions where tap water is naturally soft and acidic. Hellbenders tolerate a pH range of roughly 6.5 to 7.5, but water below 6.0 can irritate skin and compromise the biological filter's efficiency. Crushed coral or aragonite placed in a mesh bag within the filter canister provides a slow, passive pH buffer that stabilizes water chemistry without the sudden swings associated with liquid pH adjusters. Test the tap water's baseline pH and hardness before deciding whether buffering is needed.
Activated carbon is a useful accessory for maintaining water clarity and removing dissolved organic compounds, medication residues, and trace chemical contaminants. A small bag of activated carbon in the filter canister, replaced monthly, helps keep the water polished and free of discoloration. Carbon should be removed during any medical treatment, as it will adsorb the medication before it can reach therapeutic concentrations.
