Dusting coats prey in calcium or vitamin powder immediately before feeding, while gut-loading raises the feeder's own nutritional value by feeding it a quality diet for a day or more beforehand. The two work together, and neither fully replaces the other.

A typical, conservative approach is calcium without D3 on most feedings, calcium with D3 a couple of times per week for animals under good UVB, and a multivitamin roughly once a week. Growing juveniles and gravid females generally need calcium more frequently than settled adults. Because individual needs vary with UVB exposure, age, and breeding status, treat published schedules as starting points and adjust with veterinary input.

Worms such as silkworms and hornworms are useful periodic treats: silkworms are soft and well regarded nutritionally, while hornworms are high in moisture and helpful for a slightly dehydrated animal. Waxworms and other fatty larvae are best reserved as rare treats rather than routine fare.

Adult frilled dragons may occasionally accept small amounts of plant matter or a very small, appropriately sized vertebrate prey item, though many individuals show little interest in greens. If you offer plants, focus on safe, calcium-favorable leafy options and treat them as enrichment rather than a dietary requirement.

The point of variety is nutritional insurance and behavioral interest. Rotating prey types reduces the risk that a single feeder's weaknesses compound over time, and novel items can re-engage a dragon that has grown bored with one food.

Introduce new foods gradually and watch for acceptance and digestion. Sudden large changes, or rich treats given too freely, can cause refusal of staples or unwanted weight gain.

Foods to Avoid

Some foods are dangerous and should never be offered. Fireflies and other bioluminescent beetles are notably toxic to reptiles and can be fatal even in tiny amounts. Wild-caught insects of any kind carry the dual risk of pesticide exposure and internal parasites, so collecting bugs from the yard is a gamble that is rarely worth taking.

Avoid feeders and produce that skew the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio in the wrong direction when they make up a large share of the diet, and steer clear of insects with very hard exoskeletons for young dragons that may struggle to digest them. Avocado and a number of common houseplants are toxic and should be kept out of the enclosure entirely.

Be cautious with oversized prey. A feeder that is too large is both a choking and an impaction risk, and the stress of a struggle with unmanageable prey is itself a welfare concern. When in doubt, size down.

Finally, avoid relying on a monotonous diet of fatty treat insects. They are not toxic in the way fireflies are, but a long-term diet dominated by them quietly produces obesity and nutritional deficiency.

Feeding Schedule

Feeding frequency tracks closely with age. Hatchlings and young juveniles typically eat daily, often more than once, to fuel rapid growth, while sub-adults transition toward feeding most days. Adults generally do well on a reduced schedule of feedings several times a week rather than every day, which helps prevent obesity in a captive animal that cannot range as it would in the wild.

Offer as much as the dragon will actively hunt over a short window rather than leaving food in the enclosure indefinitely. Uneaten insects can stress or even bite a basking lizard, and loose feeders also disrupt your ability to judge appetite. Removing leftovers keeps the enclosure clean and your portion estimates honest.

Tie feeding to the daily temperature cycle. These reptiles digest properly only when they can reach correct basking temperatures, so feed during the warm, well-lit part of the day and avoid large meals just before the temperature drops for the night.
