Five-Lined Skinks (Plestiodon fasciatus) are active insectivores native to the forests and woodland edges of eastern North America. In the wild they spend much of their day foraging through leaf litter, rotting logs, and rocky crevices, consuming a broad spectrum of small invertebrates. This constant movement and varied prey base means their metabolic demands, while modest compared to larger lizards, require consistent and nutritionally complete feeding in captivity to prevent deficiencies that accumulate over months and years.
Calcium metabolism is the central dietary concern for this species. Like most insectivorous reptiles, Five-Lined Skinks are vulnerable to metabolic bone disease when the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio in their diet is chronically inverted. Feeder insects are naturally phosphorus-heavy, so every feeding strategy must include deliberate correction through supplementation and gut-loading. The target ratio across the overall diet is approximately 2:1 calcium to phosphorus, achieved through the cumulative pattern of dusted and gut-loaded prey rather than any single meal.
Protein and fat requirements shift across the animal's life stages. Juveniles and subadults are in a rapid growth phase and benefit from frequent, protein-rich feedings. Adults, by contrast, are maintaining body condition rather than building mass, and overfeeding high-fat prey items leads to obesity and hepatic stress. The Five-Lined Skink's small body size means that even modest caloric excess compounds quickly, making portion control more consequential than it might seem for such a small reptile.
Hydration is an often-overlooked component of nutrition. Five-Lined Skinks inhabit relatively humid microhabitats and derive a meaningful portion of their moisture from the prey they consume. In captivity, the combination of heated enclosures and lower ambient humidity can create a subtle but chronic dehydration that suppresses appetite and slows digestion. Maintaining appropriate enclosure humidity, providing a shallow water dish, and offering well-hydrated gut-loaded insects all contribute to the animal's overall fluid balance.
