Calcium metabolism is the cornerstone of amphibian nutrition and demands particular attention with Bombina orientalis. Like all amphibians, fire-bellied toads are vulnerable to metabolic bone disease when calcium intake falls short of physiological demand. Fire-bellied toads absorb water directly through their permeable ventral skin, and the quality of that water influences nutrient uptake and waste excretion.
