In the wild, they are opportunistic hunters that consume whatever invertebrates they can overpower, including ants, beetles, spiders, caterpillars, and various other arthropods encountered during their daily basking and foraging routines. This dietary breadth means their nutritional requirements are met not by any single prey item but by the cumulative variety consumed over days and weeks.

In captivity, replicating that diversity requires deliberate effort. The keeper must supply a rotation of appropriately sized feeder insects that collectively deliver balanced protein, moderate fat, and a favorable calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. Because Fence Lizards are small-bodied with correspondingly fast metabolisms, even minor nutritional deficiencies compound quickly. A juvenile that misses adequate calcium for just a few weeks can develop early signs of metabolic bone disease, including soft jaws and difficulty capturing prey.

The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio is the dietary metric that demands the most consistent attention. Nearly all commercially available feeder insects are phosphorus-heavy, and without corrective supplementation through dusting and gut-loading, the cumulative mineral imbalance will erode skeletal integrity over time. The target across the overall diet is approximately 2:1 calcium to phosphorus, a ratio achieved through the combined strategy of dusting, gut-loading, and selecting feeders with naturally better mineral profiles.

Hydration is an often-underestimated component of Fence Lizard nutrition. These lizards obtain a significant portion of their daily water intake from the moisture content of their prey and from drinking droplets off enclosure surfaces after misting. Dehydrated feeder insects, particularly those stored for long periods without fresh food or water gel, deliver substantially less moisture than freshly gut-loaded stock, which can contribute to subclinical dehydration that dampens appetite and slows digestion.

What to Look For

Prey size is the most important selection criterion for Fence Lizards. These are small animals with correspondingly small mouths, and the standard guideline of offering insects no wider than the space between the lizard's eyes applies with particular force here. Oversized prey can cause choking, regurgitation, or impaction, and a Fence Lizard that struggles repeatedly with too-large feeders may develop feeding anxiety and begin refusing food altogether.

Freshness and vitality of the feeder insects matter more than keepers sometimes appreciate. Insects that arrive sluggish, dehydrated, or half-dead have already metabolized much of their gut contents and body reserves, meaning they deliver a fraction of the nutrition that an active, recently gut-loaded insect would provide. When purchasing feeders online, choose suppliers that ship with heat or cold packs appropriate to the season and guarantee live arrival.

Gut-load receptivity should influence which species you stock as staples. The most nutritionally valuable feeding arrangement is one where the insects consume a calcium-rich, vegetable-based diet for 24 to 48 hours before being offered to the lizard. Feeders that readily eat fresh produce and commercial gut-load formulas transform themselves into mineral delivery systems far more effective than surface dusting alone. Species that are picky eaters or that subsist mainly on grain offer less nutritional flexibility.

Storage practicality rounds out the decision. Fence Lizard keepers typically maintain just one or two animals, so purchasing insects in quantities that can be housed and gut-loaded without excessive die-off is important. Choose feeder species that survive well at room temperature in simple containers, eat readily available foods, and do not require elaborate setups to maintain for the week or two between purchases.

Staple Feeder Insects

Small crickets are the most traditional and widely available staple feeder for Fence Lizards. Their erratic hopping movement triggers strong prey-drive responses, and their size range makes it easy to match them to lizards of any age. For juveniles, pinhead to one-eighth-inch crickets are appropriate; adults take one-quarter-inch to three-eighths-inch crickets comfortably. Crickets gut-load readily on fresh vegetables, commercial gut-load diets, and even moistened fish flakes, which makes them nutritionally versatile. The primary drawbacks are their noise, odor, tendency to escape, and relatively short lifespan in storage, all of which are manageable with proper containment and prompt use.

Small Dubia roach nymphs are an excellent alternative staple for keepers who prefer a quieter, longer-lived feeder. Nymphs in the quarter-inch range are well suited to adult Fence Lizards, while smaller nymphs serve juveniles. Dubia roaches cannot climb smooth surfaces or fly, making them far easier to contain than crickets. They accept gut-load diets enthusiastically, produce minimal odor, and survive for weeks in a simple bin with egg crate and a moisture source. The only practical limitation is that their relatively passive movement may not stimulate the same aggressive hunting response as crickets, so some keepers alternate between the two.

Black soldier fly larvae offer a third staple option with the added benefit of naturally elevated calcium content. Their soft bodies are easily digested, and their slow movement makes them accessible even to younger or less experienced hunters. They require minimal care, surviving at room temperature for extended periods when kept in a shallow container with a small amount of substrate. Because they are higher in fat than crickets or Dubia nymphs, they work best as a co-staple offered alongside leaner options rather than as the sole daily feeder.

Building a reliable staple rotation around two of these three species ensures that the Fence Lizard receives consistent, high-quality nutrition without the keeper needing to maintain a complicated insect inventory. Consistency and proper preparation of whichever staple you choose will always outperform haphazard variety.

Variety and Occasional Feeders

Supplemental feeders serve two purposes in a Fence Lizard's diet: they fill micronutrient gaps that no single staple can cover, and they provide behavioral enrichment by introducing novel prey types that challenge the lizard's hunting instincts. A Fence Lizard that encounters the same cricket at every meal is nutritionally and behaviorally understimulated compared to one that regularly encounters different textures, movement patterns, and nutritional profiles.

Small mealworms are a convenient rotational feeder with a long shelf life and minimal maintenance requirements. They can be stored in the refrigerator to slow their development and offered a few at a time as part of a mixed feeding. Their harder chitin provides useful jaw exercise and trace minerals, though this same toughness means they should not dominate the diet, particularly for juveniles whose digestive systems handle softer prey more efficiently.

Small waxworms and butterworms are high-fat, high-moisture treats that most Fence Lizards accept eagerly. Their softness and caloric density make them useful for underweight animals or those recovering from illness, but their addictive palatability can lead to prey fixation if offered too frequently. Limiting these to once or twice per week at most, and never more than two or three per feeding, keeps them in the treat category where they belong.

Flightless fruit flies and bean beetles are outstanding variety feeders for juvenile Fence Lizards and small adults. Their tiny size is perfectly scaled for young animals that cannot yet handle even the smallest crickets safely, and their rapid, random movement patterns elicit strong hunting behavior. Cultures of flightless fruit flies are inexpensive, self-sustaining for several weeks, and produce a continuous supply of feeders with minimal effort. For keepers raising hatchlings, maintaining one or two fruit fly cultures alongside pinhead crickets provides a solid nutritional foundation during the critical early growth phase.

Supplements

Calcium and vitamin supplementation is essential for captive Fence Lizards and cannot be replaced by feeding variety alone. The mineral profile of commercially raised insects, regardless of species, does not match the diversity of wild-caught invertebrates that a free-ranging Fence Lizard would consume across its natural habitat. Supplementation corrects this gap and prevents the slow, insidious onset of deficiency diseases that may not become clinically apparent until significant damage has occurred.

The core supplementation rotation involves three products used in a structured schedule. A pure calcium carbonate powder without D3 is the most frequently used, applied as a light dusting to feeder insects at most meals. A calcium powder with D3 is used at a reduced frequency, typically one to two feedings per week, to ensure adequate vitamin D3 for calcium absorption. A broad-spectrum reptile multivitamin is offered once weekly, providing trace minerals and vitamins that neither calcium powder nor gut-loading fully supplies.

The dusting frequency for D3 depends heavily on the enclosure's UVB lighting setup. Fence Lizards housed under high-quality UVB bulbs that are replaced on schedule synthesize much of their own D3 through cutaneous photosynthesis, which means supplemental D3 can be reduced to once weekly or even less. Animals without adequate UVB, which is a husbandry deficiency that should be corrected rather than compensated for, require more frequent D3 supplementation to prevent metabolic bone disease.

Gut-loading complements surface dusting and in many respects is the more effective delivery method. Minerals consumed by the feeder insect are incorporated into its tissues and digestive contents, making them more bioavailable to the lizard than powder sitting on the insect's exoskeleton, much of which falls off before consumption. A simple gut-load of fresh collard greens, butternut squash, and a commercial calcium-fortified insect diet, offered to feeders 24 to 48 hours before use, dramatically improves the nutritional quality of every meal.

Foods to Avoid

Wild-caught insects pose the single greatest dietary risk to captive Fence Lizards. Despite the intuitive appeal of offering natural prey, insects collected outdoors carry unpredictable loads of pesticide residues, herbicide contamination, and internal parasites. Fence Lizards are small enough that even trace quantities of agricultural chemicals can cause acute toxicity, and a single parasitized wild cricket can introduce infections that are expensive and difficult to treat. The safety of captive-bred feeders from reputable suppliers is always worth the cost.

Fireflies and other bioluminescent insects are acutely toxic to reptiles and must never be offered under any circumstances. The lucibufagins present in firefly tissue are cardiotoxic and can kill a Fence Lizard rapidly, often before any intervention is possible. Any brightly colored or unusually patterned wild insect should be assumed to be aposematic and therefore dangerous. If you cannot positively identify an insect as both safe and captive-bred, it has no place in the feeding rotation.

Fence Lizards are strict insectivores with no capacity to digest or derive meaningful nutrition from plant matter. Fruits, vegetables, and commercial omnivore diets should never be placed in the enclosure as food for the lizard. The only appropriate use of produce in a Fence Lizard's dietary program is as gut-load material inside the feeder insects themselves. Dog food, cat food, and reptile diets formulated for omnivorous species contain inappropriate macronutrient ratios and additives that stress the liver and kidneys of an obligate insectivore.

Overreliance on high-fat feeders such as waxworms and butterworms is a common husbandry mistake driven by the lizard's enthusiastic acceptance of these items. Chronic high-fat feeding leads to obesity, hepatic lipidosis, and stubborn prey fixation where the animal refuses all staple feeders in favor of the treat items. These feeders have a valid role in the diet when used sparingly, but they must remain occasional supplements, not foundations.

Feeding Schedule

Juvenile Fence Lizards are growing rapidly and require daily feedings to support skeletal development, muscle growth, and the energy demands of their active foraging behavior. Offer as many appropriately sized insects as the young lizard will consume in a focused feeding window of roughly five to ten minutes, then remove uneaten prey. Leftover crickets in particular can stress or even nip at a small lizard overnight, so prompt removal is important for both hygiene and animal welfare.

As the lizard approaches adult size, typically by eight to twelve months of age, feeding frequency should transition to every other day or approximately four to five times per week. Adult Fence Lizards in good body condition maintain their weight and energy levels comfortably on this schedule. Each feeding for an adult generally consists of four to eight appropriately sized insects, adjusted up or down based on the individual's activity level, reproductive status, and visible body condition.

Timing feedings to align with the lizard's natural activity cycle produces the best digestive outcomes. Fence Lizards are diurnal and reach peak activity and core body temperature during mid-morning to early afternoon after adequate basking. Offering food during this window ensures that the animal's digestive enzymes are fully active and that the meal is processed efficiently before the evening temperature drop. Feeding a lizard that has not yet warmed up risks incomplete digestion and regurgitation.

Seasonal appetite fluctuations are normal and should be respected rather than overridden. Many Fence Lizards experience a natural reduction in appetite during the shorter days of autumn and winter, even in captivity where photoperiod is artificially controlled. This decrease often corresponds to a mild cooling period that benefits long-term health and may be necessary for breeding. Continuing to offer food on the regular schedule while accepting that the lizard may eat less or skip meals during these periods is the appropriate response. Forced feeding or dramatically increasing prey items to compensate for seasonal slowdown adds unnecessary stress and caloric load.
