Emerald Tree Skinks (Lamprolepis smaragdina) are reluctant dish drinkers. In the wild, they hydrate almost exclusively from water droplets that accumulate on foliage after rain or from morning dew condensation on leaf surfaces. This behavioral preference persists stubbornly in captivity, and a skink that ignores a floor-level water dish is not being difficult; it is acting on a deeply ingrained survival instinct that associates standing water on the ground with predator exposure rather than a safe drinking opportunity.
Pressure sprayers are the most basic and widely accessible water delivery tool for this species. A one-to-two-liter handheld pump sprayer filled with dechlorinated or reverse-osmosis water allows the keeper to coat foliage, branches, and glass surfaces with droplets during two or three daily misting sessions. The skinks typically begin drinking within seconds of the spray contacting their perching surfaces, lapping water from leaf edges and branch bark. The simplicity and low cost of a manual sprayer make it an ideal starting point, though the labor of multiple daily sessions becomes significant over weeks and months.
Drip systems offer a passive, gravity-fed alternative that delivers a continuous slow trickle of water onto foliage below. A simple drip cup mounted at the top of the enclosure with a small hole in the base produces a steady stream of droplets that cascade through the plant canopy, creating multiple drinking opportunities along the way. The drip rate should be calibrated to produce individual droplets rather than a stream, which more closely mimics the natural rainfall drip pattern the skinks recognize as a water source. A collection dish at the bottom catches the runoff and prevents substrate waterlogging.
Small waterfall or dripper units designed for chameleon and day gecko enclosures work well for Emerald Tree Skinks. These recirculating systems pump water from a base reservoir up through tubing to a release point at the top of the enclosure, creating a continuous cycle of moving water. The sound and visual motion of flowing water attract the skinks' attention and encourage drinking, though the reservoir must be cleaned frequently to prevent bacterial biofilm accumulation. Stagnant water in the reservoir becomes a health hazard rather than a hydration aid if maintenance lapses.
