Foods to Avoid

Goldfish and their close relatives contain high levels of thiaminase, which systematically breaks down thiamine in the turtle's body. Processed human foods have no place in a mud turtle's diet. Earthworms dug from residential yards may contain lawn-care chemicals, slugs and snails from gardens may carry lungworm larvae, and aquatic invertebrates from local ponds introduce parasites adapted to chelonian hosts. The modest cost savings of free-caught food is trivial compared to the veterinary bills and potential fatality associated with parasitic or toxic contamination.

Feeding Schedule
