Desert Iguanas (Dipsosaurus dorsalis) are active, ground-dwelling lizards that require more horizontal floor space than their modest body length might suggest. In the wild, an individual may traverse several hundred meters in a single foraging session across open desert flats and through low scrub, and captive animals that lack adequate room to move develop stress-related behaviors, poor muscle tone, and depressed appetites. The absolute minimum enclosure for a single adult is 48 inches long by 24 inches deep by 18 inches tall, though larger setups approaching 60 by 30 inches or greater produce noticeably healthier and more behaviorally engaged animals.
Enclosure material affects the keeper's ability to maintain the extreme thermal gradients this species demands. Glass terrariums with screen tops are widely used and allow excellent visibility, but they can struggle to hold the very high basking temperatures Desert Iguanas need unless supplemented with reflective backing or partial screen covers. PVC and melamine enclosures retain heat far more efficiently, making it easier to sustain a basking zone above 120 degrees Fahrenheit while keeping the cool end in the low eighties. Front-opening designs are preferable to top-opening ones, as Desert Iguanas are ground-oriented and a hand reaching down from above can trigger a flight response.
Ventilation must be adequate to prevent stagnant, humid air from pooling in the enclosure. Desert Iguanas evolved in arid environments where ambient humidity rarely exceeds twenty percent, and prolonged exposure to stagnant, moist air promotes respiratory infections and skin conditions. Screen tops or ventilation panels positioned to create cross-flow air movement keep humidity low without creating drafts strong enough to destabilize the thermal gradient.
Juveniles can be started in smaller enclosures, typically around 30 by 12 inches, which makes it easier to monitor feeding and ensure the young animal can locate food and water without difficulty. However, Desert Iguanas grow steadily during their first year, and the transition to adult housing should occur before the animal reaches roughly half its adult length. Delaying the move compresses the thermal gradient in the smaller space and restricts movement during a critical developmental period.
