Crested geckos are frugivorous omnivores, which sets their nutritional profile apart from the insectivorous lizards most reptile gear is designed around. In the wild they feed on a rotating mix of overripe fruit, nectar, pollen, and small invertebrates, so a captive diet has to deliver both the sugars and fiber of soft fruit and the protein and minerals of insect prey. The good news for keepers is that this species has been bred in captivity for decades, and the nutritional science behind feeding it is mature and well understood.
The single most important macro-level target is a correct calcium-to-phosphorus ratio, ideally around 2:1. Crested geckos are prone to metabolic bone disease when calcium runs low relative to phosphorus, and because so much of their diet can be fruit-heavy, calcium support is a constant theme in everything that follows. Vitamin D3, which the animal needs to metabolize calcium, can be supplied through diet, supplementation, or low-level UVB lighting.
Protein needs are moderate rather than high. Hatchlings and juveniles benefit from more frequent protein for growth, while adults do well on a lower-protein maintenance plan. Overfeeding protein-rich insects without adequate calcium is a common rookie mistake that shows up later as kinked spines or rubbery jaws.
Hydration is also a nutritional concern in this species. Crested geckos rarely drink from a standing dish and instead lap water droplets from leaves and enclosure walls after misting. A diet that looks complete on paper still fails if the animal is chronically under-hydrated, so water delivery is woven into feeding rather than treated as a separate afterthought.
