Chinese water dragons are primarily insectivorous omnivores, with the bulk of the diet coming from live invertebrate prey supplemented by smaller amounts of plant matter. Juveniles lean heavily insectivorous to support rapid growth, while adults can take a slightly higher proportion of greens and the occasional vertebrate prey item. Protein, calcium, and adequate hydration drive most of their dietary requirements.
The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio matters enormously for this species. Like most insectivorous reptiles, water dragons are prone to metabolic bone disease when fed prey that is high in phosphorus and low in calcium without correction. A target ratio of roughly two parts calcium to one part phosphorus, achieved through gut-loading and dusting, is the practical goal.
Hydration is part of nutrition for an animal this water-dependent. Water dragons absorb moisture from soaking, drinking droplets, and the moisture content of their prey and greens. A diet built only on dry feeder insects without attention to ambient humidity and water access tends to produce dehydration and poor shedding.
Vitamin D3 and UVB exposure work together to let the animal actually use dietary calcium. Even a perfectly balanced food bowl fails if the lizard cannot synthesize or absorb D3, which is why food planning for this species is inseparable from its lighting setup.
