Size is the next consideration. A reliable rule is that no feeder should be wider than the space between the chameleon's eyes; oversized prey is a genuine choking and impaction risk. Look for suppliers who sort by size class so you can match feeders to a growing animal rather than guessing from a mixed tub.

Prioritize feeders that gut-load well and hold moisture. For panther chameleons the most dependable staples are appropriately sized crickets and small-to-medium roaches, both of which gut-load readily and come in a range of sizes that track an animal's growth.

Crickets are the traditional default. They are widely available, easy to gut-load, and trigger a strong feeding response, but they are also short-lived, noisy, and prone to escaping, so plan for a feeder enclosure that keeps them fed and contained. Supplements & Gut-Loading

Supplementation is where many chameleon diets succeed or fail. The core tools are a plain calcium powder without D3, a calcium powder with D3, and a reptile multivitamin. The everyday default for most keepers is light dusting with plain calcium at the majority of feedings, with D3-containing calcium and multivitamin used much more sparingly on a schedule.

The reason for the distinction is that fat-soluble vitamins, particularly D3 and vitamin A, accumulate in the body and become toxic in excess, whereas plain calcium carbonate is far more forgiving. A common, widely discussed cadence is plain calcium at nearly every feeding, with D3 and multivitamin offered only every week or two, but the right frequency depends on your UVB setup and should be confirmed with a reptile veterinarian.

Gut-loading is the practice of feeding nutritious food to feeder insects before they are offered, turning the insect into a delivery vehicle for nutrients. A quality commercial gut-load or a mix of leafy greens, squash, and other fresh produce given to feeders for a day or two before feeding dramatically improves their value. Avoid relying on the dry, filler-heavy bedding sold as a feeder substrate; it does little for nutrition.

Store supplements properly and replace them on schedule. Vitamin potency degrades with age, heat, and humidity, so a tub of powder that has lived open on a warm shelf for a year is no longer doing its job. Buy quantities you will use within a reasonable window and keep them sealed and cool.

Foods to Avoid

Wild-caught insects head the avoid list. Insects collected from a yard or field may carry pesticide residue, parasites, or have fed on toxic plants, and even a single contaminated feeder can sicken a chameleon. Lightning bugs are specifically dangerous and have been linked to fatalities, so never offer them under any circumstances.

Fruits, vegetables, and other plant matter are not part of a chameleon's natural diet and should not be offered as food. A consistent, eager feeding response, accurate tongue strikes, and normal droppings are reassuring signs, while a sudden loss of appetite, missed strikes, or a sunken casque warrant closer attention and, if persistent, a veterinary visit.
