Jackson's chameleons are obligate insectivores, meaning their entire diet comes from live invertebrate prey. In the wild they take a rotating mix of insects depending on what is available, and that natural variety is the single most important thing to replicate in captivity. No commercial feeder insect is nutritionally complete on its own, so a healthy diet depends on combining several prey types with the two supporting practices every keeper must learn: gut-loading and dusting.
The nutritional risk that dominates chameleon husbandry is the calcium-to-phosphorus balance. Insects are naturally high in phosphorus and low in calcium, and without correction this imbalance leads to metabolic bone disease, the most common preventable killer of captive chameleons. Products in this category exist almost entirely to close that gap: calcium powders, vitamin D3 sources, and gut-load formulas that raise the nutritional value of the insects themselves.
Because Jackson's chameleons are a montane species adapted to cooler, humid highland forests, they tend to have slightly slower metabolisms than lowland reptiles. This affects how often they need to eat and how aggressively you supplement. Overfeeding fatty prey or oversupplementing fat-soluble vitamins is a real risk, so the goal is steady, varied, modestly portioned nutrition rather than volume.
Hydration is also a nutritional concern for this species. Chameleons rarely drink from standing water and instead lap moving droplets, so the food plan works hand-in-hand with a misting or dripper system. Well-hydrated insects and a properly hydrated animal both contribute to healthy digestion and nutrient uptake.
