A box of half-dead crickets is not a bargain at any price because the surviving insects will be stressed, dehydrated, and nutritionally compromised.

The calcium content of both plant and insect foods should guide purchasing decisions. Among greens, prioritize those with high calcium and low oxalate levels, since oxalates bind calcium in the digestive tract and render it unavailable for absorption. Packaging and storage instructions on commercial supplements and gut-load formulas deserve more attention than they typically receive. Calcium powders exposed to humidity clump and lose effectiveness. Multivitamins stored in heat or direct light degrade rapidly. Staple Greens and Vegetables

Variety within the safe list is the simplest insurance policy against nutritional gaps. No single vegetable provides the complete spectrum of vitamins and minerals a bearded dragon requires, but a rotating mix of five or six staple items, supplemented by occasional additions like shredded carrot, snap peas, or cactus pad, covers the vast majority of micronutrient needs. Aim to change the composition of the salad every few days so the animal is never eating the same combination for more than a week at a time.

Feeder Insects

Dubia roaches have become the preferred staple insect for Central Bearded Dragons among experienced keepers, and the reasons are straightforward. They carry a protein content of roughly 23 percent with moderate fat, gut-load readily on vegetables and commercial diets, are odorless, quiet, and incapable of climbing smooth enclosure walls. Their relatively slow movement makes them easy for bearded dragons of all ages to catch, and their soft exoskeleton is digestible even for young animals. A small biweekly purchase sustains most single-dragon households without the need for a breeding colony.

Crickets remain the most widely available feeder insect and are an acceptable staple, particularly for juvenile dragons whose high prey drive benefits from the stimulation of chasing fast-moving insects. The disadvantages of crickets are practical rather than nutritional: they are noisy, escape readily, die quickly in captivity, and can bite a sleeping dragon if left uneaten in the enclosure overnight. Purchasing only enough for two or three days of feeding and removing uneaten individuals within fifteen minutes addresses most of these concerns.

Black soldier fly larvae offer a unique advantage in the bearded dragon diet because of their naturally high calcium content. At roughly 50 to 1 calcium-to-phosphorus in some analyses, they are one of the few feeder insects that can be offered without calcium dusting, though supplementation at other feedings should continue as normal. They are slow-moving, easy to store in a cool environment, and well accepted by dragons of all ages. Phoenix worms, silkworms, and hornworms serve as valuable supplemental feeders that add moisture, nutritional variety, and behavioral enrichment. Hornworms in particular are high in water content and work well for animals that need a hydration boost. All three are soft-bodied and easily digested, but their cost and short shelf life make them impractical as sole staples. Supplements

A plain calcium carbonate powder without added phosphorus or D3 is the most frequently used supplement in bearded dragon husbandry. Gut-loading feeder insects is a supplementation strategy that works from the inside out and is at least as important as surface dusting. Feeding insects a nutrient-dense diet of dark leafy greens, squash, sweet potato, and commercial gut-load formula for 24 to 48 hours before offering them to the dragon transforms each insect into a concentrated package of bioavailable vitamins and minerals. Foods to Avoid

Lettuce varieties such as iceberg and romaine are among the most commonly offered yet least appropriate greens for bearded dragons. Iceberg lettuce is nutritionally vacant, consisting almost entirely of water with negligible vitamin or mineral content, and its regular use fills the stomach without contributing meaningfully to the diet. Romaine is marginally better but still falls well short of the calcium density and nutrient complexity provided by collard greens, mustard greens, or dandelion greens. Relying on either trains the animal to fill up on low-value food and can suppress appetite for more nutritious options.

Spinach, beet greens, and Swiss chard contain high concentrations of oxalic acid, which binds dietary calcium in the gastrointestinal tract and prevents its absorption. Occasional incidental exposure is unlikely to cause harm, but routine inclusion of these greens actively undermines the calcium supplementation program and accelerates the progression toward metabolic bone disease. Given the abundance of safe, calcium-rich alternatives, there is no practical reason to include high-oxalate greens in the diet.

Avocado is toxic to bearded dragons and must never be offered under any circumstances. The persin compound found throughout the fruit, skin, pit, and leaves causes cardiac and respiratory distress in reptiles at doses that would be harmless to humans. Rhubarb is similarly dangerous due to its extremely high oxalic acid concentration, which can cause acute renal damage in addition to the chronic calcium-binding effects seen with milder oxalate sources.

Fireflies and any wild-caught insects represent an acute poisoning risk. Fireflies contain lucibufagins, steroidal toxins that are lethal to bearded dragons even in tiny quantities. A single firefly can kill an adult dragon within hours. Wild-caught insects of any species carry unpredictable pesticide loads and parasite burdens that no amount of visual inspection can detect. The only safe feeder insects are those bred in controlled captive environments by reputable suppliers. Citrus fruits should also be avoided, as their acidity irritates the digestive lining and can cause diarrhea and discomfort with repeated exposure.

Feeding Schedule

Continuing to offer a varied, well-prepared salad every morning reinforces the habit that will sustain the animal through its adult years.

Adult bearded dragons over twelve months of age thrive on a diet that is approximately 70 to 80 percent plant matter and 20 to 30 percent insects, roughly the inverse of the juvenile ratio. Salad is offered fresh every morning, and insects are provided every other day or roughly three to four times per week, depending on the individual's body condition and activity level. Overfeeding insects to adults is one of the most common husbandry errors and leads directly to obesity, fatty liver disease, and shortened lifespan.

Body condition should guide all feeding decisions more than any fixed schedule. A healthy adult bearded dragon has a well-rounded tail base, clearly defined musculature along the limbs and spine, and a flat to gently rounded abdomen without visible fat pads. If the animal begins to develop a pronounced belly or fat deposits at the base of the skull, insect portions should be reduced and the plant component increased. Conversely, an animal whose tail base appears thin or whose spine is overly prominent may need more frequent or larger insect offerings.
