Humidity and Ventilation

Stagnant, humid air promotes mold, bacterial growth, and respiratory pathogens. Adequate airflow prevents these problems but accelerates moisture loss. Cleaning and Maintenance

A full substrate change and deep clean should be performed every four to six weeks, or sooner if odor or visible contamination warrants it. Remove the tortoise to a secure, warm holding container. Strip all substrate from the enclosure, remove all furnishings, and scrub every surface with a reptile-safe disinfectant. Outdoor enclosures require a different maintenance cadence. Feces should still be removed daily, but the natural soil substrate benefits from microbial decomposition and does not need full replacement on the same schedule as indoor substrate. Instead, top-dress the soil with fresh leaf litter or compost every few months, turn the soil periodically to prevent compaction, and address any drainage problems that lead to standing water. Inspect the enclosure perimeter, walls, and predator-proof covering regularly for damage or gaps, as wear from weather exposure can create security vulnerabilities over time.
