In the wild, they are opportunistic carnivores that consume whatever soft-bodied invertebrates they encounter beneath leaf litter, rotting logs, and damp soil. Their metabolic rate is modest compared to similarly sized lizards, but their nutritional requirements are precise. The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio is the central dietary concern for any captive amphibian, and Ambystoma laterale is no exception. Most commercially available feeder invertebrates carry a phosphorus-heavy mineral profile that, left uncorrected, gradually depletes skeletal calcium stores and leads to metabolic bone disease. The target dietary ratio is approximately 2:1 calcium to phosphorus, achieved through a disciplined combination of calcium dusting and gut-loading rather than any single corrective measure. Because Blue-Spotted Salamanders are small-bodied, even minor imbalances accumulate quickly relative to their total skeletal mass.
Hydration is inseparable from nutrition in amphibians. Blue-Spotted Salamanders absorb water directly through their permeable skin, and their prey items contribute meaningfully to fluid intake. A dehydrated salamander will reduce or refuse food intake well before showing the sunken eyes or wrinkled skin that keepers associate with water stress. Maintaining substrate moisture and offering prey with high water content are nutritional strategies as much as husbandry ones.
Energy requirements fluctuate with temperature and season. During warmer months or when housed at the upper end of their tolerable temperature range, salamanders metabolize food more rapidly and may accept larger or more frequent meals. During cooler periods or brumation, appetite naturally diminishes. Attempting to force-feed or maintain summer feeding schedules through a cooling period stresses the digestive system and can lead to regurgitation or bacterial overgrowth in the gut.
