Calcium and vitamin D3 are the cornerstones of bearded dragon health. Without adequate calcium and the ability to metabolize it, dragons are highly prone to metabolic bone disease, a debilitating and often irreversible condition. Diet alone rarely supplies enough calcium, which is why dusting feeders and offering calcium-rich greens both matter. For prepared and pelleted foods, scrutinize the ingredient list rather than the front-of-bag marketing. The first few ingredients should be identifiable whole foods rather than vague fillers, by-product meals, or heavy doses of grain. Many commercial bearded dragon pellets are over-processed and best treated as an occasional convenience item rather than a dietary staple.

Supplement quality varies widely. Look for calcium powders that clearly state whether they contain vitamin D3 and whether they include phosphorus, because you will often want phosphorus-free calcium for regular dusting. Multivitamin supplements should list their vitamin A source, since excess preformed vitamin A can be harmful while beta-carotene is safely converted as needed.

Vegetables beyond leafy greens add valuable variety and texture. Finely chopped or grated firm vegetables can be mixed into salads, while some softer vegetables are readily accepted on their own. Color variety is a useful informal guide, as a salad spanning several colors tends to span a broader range of nutrients.

Fruit should be treated as an occasional treat rather than a daily item because of its sugar content. Small amounts offered now and then can encourage a picky eater to engage with its salad, but fruit-heavy diets can lead to loose stools and unbalanced nutrition. Supplements & Calcium

Supplementation is not optional for captive bearded dragons; it is essential preventive care. A thoughtful supplement schedule fills these gaps and is one of the most effective defenses against metabolic bone disease.

Calcium is the most frequently used supplement, applied by lightly dusting feeder insects. Many keepers use a phosphorus-free calcium powder for the majority of dustings, choosing between formulas with and without added vitamin D3 depending on the dragon's UVB setup and life stage. Younger, fast-growing dragons generally need calcium more frequently than mature adults.

Multivitamin supplements are used less often, typically once or twice a week, to cover trace nutrients the diet may miss. Because some vitamins can be harmful in excess, particularly preformed vitamin A, restraint and a consistent schedule are wiser than heavy or erratic dosing. Storage and freshness affect potency. Foods to Avoid

Some foods are not merely low in value but actively dangerous to bearded dragons, and knowing the list is as important as knowing what to feed. A number of common plants and vegetables should be excluded or strictly limited. Processed, salty, sugary, or seasoned human foods have no place in a dragon's diet.
