Basilisks are true omnivores with a strong lean toward animal protein, especially while young and growing. In the wild they pursue a constantly moving menu of insects, spiders, small fish, the occasional pinky-sized rodent, and a meaningful amount of plant material such as flowers, fruit, and tender shoots. A captive diet that ignores either half of that equation tends to fail slowly rather than dramatically, which is why nutrition deserves more planning than most keepers expect.

Hatchlings and juveniles are almost entirely insectivorous and need frequent, protein-dense meals to fuel their rapid growth. As a basilisk matures, the balance shifts: adults still take prey eagerly but should be offered a steadily increasing share of plant matter to round out the diet and avoid the obesity that comes from a captive lizard eating richer prey than it would ever catch in the wild.

The single most important nutritional concept for any basilisk keeper is the calcium-to-phosphorus relationship. Insects are naturally phosphorus-heavy and calcium-poor, so a diet of plain feeders steadily depletes the animal's calcium reserves and, combined with inadequate UVB, drives metabolic bone disease. Every feeding decision below ties back to correcting that imbalance through gut loading, dusting, and variety.

Staple Feeder Insects

A rotating selection of feeder insects forms the backbone of the diet. Crickets and appropriately sized roaches are the usual staples because they are nutritious, easy to gut load, and available in a range of sizes. Variety matters more than any single 'best' insect, so a keeper is better served by cycling through several feeder types than by relying on one for months at a time.

Look for feeders that are active, plump, and free of die-off in the container, and size them to the lizard rather than to convenience. A reliable rule is that no prey item should be wider than the space between the basilisk's eyes; oversized prey is a genuine impaction and choking risk in a fast-swallowing animal.

Higher-fat feeders such as waxworms, butterworms, and similar grubs are useful as occasional additions but make poor staples because they encourage selective feeding and weight gain. Treat them as the dessert tray rather than the main course, and keep them out of the rotation for animals that have already grown reluctant to take leaner prey.

Whatever the mix, gut loading is non-negotiable. Feeders should be fed a nutritious diet of leafy greens, vegetables, and a commercial gut-load product for at least a day or two before they are offered, so the basilisk is effectively eating a pre-loaded multivitamin rather than an empty insect.

Plant Matter & Produce

Because basilisks take a real share of vegetation in the wild, captive adults benefit from regular plant offerings rather than an all-insect diet. Finely chopped leafy greens, squash, bell pepper, and small amounts of soft fruit are commonly accepted, though individual animals can be stubbornly picky and may need patient, repeated exposure before they sample anything green.

Aim for nutrient-dense produce over watery filler. Dark leafy greens supply calcium and fiber, while a thin scattering of fruit can be used to make a salad more tempting to a reluctant eater. Fruit should stay a minor component because its sugar content does the animal few favors and can sour quickly in a warm, humid enclosure.

Presentation often decides whether plant matter gets eaten at all. Mixing chopped greens into a shallow dish, dusting them lightly, or scattering bright pieces where a basking lizard will notice them all help. Any uneaten produce should be removed the same day to keep the enclosure clean and avoid attracting flies.

Supplements & Dusting

Supplementation is where many otherwise careful diets quietly go wrong. The core supplements are a plain calcium powder, a calcium-with-vitamin-D3 product, and a balanced reptile multivitamin, each used on a schedule rather than all at once. The goal is to correct the calcium shortfall in insects without tipping into oversupplementation of fat-soluble vitamins.

A common, conservative approach is to lightly dust feeders with plain calcium at most feedings, use the D3-inclusive calcium less frequently, and offer the multivitamin only occasionally. Keepers providing strong, correctly placed UVB can lean more on plain calcium, since the animal synthesizes its own D3; those with weaker lighting depend more on the D3 supplement. Either way, more is not better.

Dust feeders just before offering them so the powder is still clinging when the basilisk strikes, and shake off heavy excess so the insect is coated, not caked. Pair supplementation with the gut-loading habit described earlier, and the two strategies reinforce each other rather than substituting for one another.

What to Look For

When sourcing feeders and food products, prioritize cleanliness, consistency, and traceability. Healthy feeder colonies and reputable suppliers produce insects free of mold, mites, and unexplained die-off; a container that arrives half dead is a sign to look elsewhere regardless of price.

For supplement products, read the label rather than the marketing. A useful calcium powder states whether it contains D3 and at what level, and a multivitamin lists its vitamin A source and form. Phosphorus-free calcium is generally preferred for dusting because it does not add to the very imbalance you are trying to correct.

Packaging and storage matter more than they seem. Vitamin potency degrades with heat, light, and humidity, so smaller containers that get used up within their shelf life beat bulk tubs that sit open for a year in a warm reptile room. Date your supplements when you open them and replace anything past its useful life.

Foods to Avoid

Certain items are best kept off the menu entirely. Wild-caught insects carry parasites and, more importantly, the risk of pesticide exposure, which can be fatal to a small reptile; the convenience is never worth it. Fireflies and other bioluminescent insects are specifically dangerous and should never be offered.

Avoid feeders and prey that are too large, too hard-shelled for the animal's size, or too fatty to serve as anything but a rare treat. Routine feeding of pinky mice to a basilisk that does not need them is a common cause of obesity and fatty liver problems, so vertebrate prey should be occasional rather than habitual.

On the produce side, skip anything high in oxalates as a staple, avoid citrus and other harsh acidic fruits, and never offer human processed foods, seasoned items, or anything from a treated lawn or garden. When in doubt about a new food, the safe default is to leave it out until you have confirmed it is appropriate.

Feeding Schedule

Feeding frequency tracks closely with age. Hatchlings and juveniles are fed daily or close to it, with several appropriately sized insects per meal to support fast growth. This is the stage where consistency pays the largest dividends, since early nutritional gaps are difficult to undo later.

As a basilisk approaches adult size, meals are spaced out to every other day or a few times a week, with portion control becoming the keeper's main job. A captive adult burns far fewer calories than a wild one chasing prey across a riverbank, so the same enthusiasm at feeding time can quietly produce an overweight animal if the keeper does not adjust.

Feed during the warm part of the day when the animal is active and its basking site is up to temperature, since digestion depends on heat. Watch body condition rather than the clock: visible hip and rib outlines suggest underfeeding, while a thick tail base and rounded body suggest it is time to cut back. Always provide fresh water alongside food, as basilisks drink readily and often defecate in their water, requiring frequent changes.
