Green anoles are obligate insectivores. In the wild they spend the day stalking small, moving invertebrates through foliage, and a captive diet has to honor that reality. Unlike many popular reptiles, anoles will not reliably accept commercial pellets, salad mixes, or fruit. The foundation of every plan you build should be appropriately sized live insects, offered with enough variety to cover the animal's nutritional bases.

Two nutrients deserve special attention: calcium and vitamin D3. The single most common diet-related illness in captive anoles is metabolic bone disease, which develops when an animal cannot absorb or access enough calcium, usually because of inadequate supplementation, insufficient UVB exposure, or both. Because the food and the lighting work together, you cannot evaluate a feeding plan in isolation from the enclosure's UVB setup.

Whole insects are nutritionally incomplete on their own, so what the insect has eaten before it reaches your anole matters enormously. Gut-loading—feeding the feeder insects a nutritious diet for a day or two beforehand—is the lever that turns a plain cricket into a balanced meal. Pair that with light dusting of supplements and you have covered most of the gaps.

Hydration is part of nutrition for this species. Green anoles rarely recognize standing water in a bowl; instead they lap droplets from leaves and enclosure surfaces. That makes daily misting a feeding-adjacent task rather than an afterthought, and it is worth planning for alongside the food itself.

What to Look For

Size is the first filter. A reliable rule of thumb is that no feeder insect should be longer than the space between the anole's eyes. Prey that is too large risks choking and gut impaction, and it often gets refused outright. When in doubt, size down—several small insects are always safer than one ambitious mouthful.

Source quality is the second filter. Feeders from a reputable supplier are well-fed, active, and free of the pesticide residue and parasites that come with wild-caught insects. Resist the temptation to collect bugs from the yard; the savings are not worth the contamination risk.

Look for feeders you can actually gut-load and dust. Species that readily eat leafy greens, vegetables, and commercial gut-load before being offered will deliver far more nutrition than insects fed nothing. The ability to hold and condition feeders for a day or two is a feature, not a chore.

Finally, prioritize movement. Anoles are visual hunters triggered by motion, so lively, mobile prey elicits a strong feeding response while sluggish or dead insects are frequently ignored. A feeder's vigor is a genuine selection criterion.

Staple Feeder Insects

Crickets are the classic staple and a sensible default. They come in a range of sizes to match a growing anole, they move in the way that triggers a feeding response, and they are easy to gut-load and dust. Their main drawbacks are odor and the fact that uneaten crickets can stress or even nibble a resting anole, so they should not be left loose indefinitely.

Flightless fruit flies are invaluable for juveniles, hatchlings, and the smallest adults. They are tiny enough for animals that cannot yet manage a cricket, and cultures are inexpensive to maintain. For a young anole, a steady supply of fruit flies often bridges the gap until the animal can graduate to larger prey.

Small dubia roaches or roach nymphs round out a strong staple rotation. They are nutritious, far less odorous than crickets, and cannot climb smooth terrarium walls, which makes them easy to contain. As with any feeder, match the nymph size to the anole and dust appropriately.

A good plan does not lean on a single insect. Rotating among two or three staples keeps the feeding response sharp, broadens the nutrient profile, and reduces the chance of a hunger strike if your anole tires of one option.

Supplemental & Variety Foods

Beyond the staples sit a tier of occasional feeders that add variety and a bit of enrichment. Waxworms, small silkworms, small hornworms, and houseflies all have a place, but most should be offered sparingly. Waxworms in particular are rich and fatty—think of them as a treat rather than a meal, useful for a thin animal or as the occasional change of pace.

Mealworms warrant a note of caution. Their hard chitin exoskeleton is more difficult to digest than a cricket's, and a steady diet of them is not ideal. If you offer them at all, freshly molted (white) mealworms are gentler on the digestive system, and they should remain an occasional item.

The point of variety is not novelty for its own sake. Different feeders carry different fat, protein, and moisture profiles, and a varied diet smooths out the deficiencies any single insect would create. Variety also keeps the hunting instinct engaged, which matters for an animal whose primary daily activity is the hunt.

Whatever supplemental feeders you choose, avoid building the diet around any one high-fat insect. Treats are treats; the bulk of the calories should still come from the well-gut-loaded staples.

Calcium & Vitamin Supplements

Two supplements do most of the work: a calcium powder and a multivitamin. Calcium is offered most often, dusted lightly onto feeders by shaking the insects in a cup with a small amount of powder. Phosphorus-free calcium is the usual choice, and it comes in two forms—with and without added D3—which you balance against the UVB your lighting provides.

A reptile multivitamin fills in the trace nutrients calcium alone cannot, including a sensible source of vitamin A. Because the fat-soluble vitamins can accumulate, the multivitamin is used much less frequently than plain calcium—roughly on a weekly cadence for many keepers rather than at every feeding.

Scheduling depends on the animal. Fast-growing juveniles and breeding females have higher calcium demands and are typically dusted at most feedings, while a settled adult needs less. Because dietary D3 and UVB-driven D3 synthesis both feed the same system, the right supplement schedule is the one that fits your specific lighting setup.

More is not better. Over-supplementation carries its own risks, including hypervitaminosis from excess fat-soluble vitamins. Treat the figures here as editorial orientation and lean on a reptile-experienced veterinarian to fine-tune the regimen for your animal.

Foods to Avoid

Wild-caught insects top the avoid list. They may carry pesticide residue from lawns and gardens or internal parasites, and neither is worth the risk when clean feeders are easy to source. The convenience of free bugs is a false economy.

Fireflies and lightning bugs are genuinely dangerous and should never be offered—they contain compounds that can be fatal to small reptiles even in tiny amounts. This is one of the few hard lines in anole feeding.

Skip prey that is too large for the animal, and skip the foods that marketing sometimes implies are universal reptile fare. Commercial pellets, salad mixes, and fruit are not appropriate staples for an insectivore; an anole will generally ignore them, and they should never replace live prey.

Pinky mice and other vertebrate prey are inappropriate as well. They are far too large and fatty for a 5-to-8-inch insectivore, and they have no place in a green anole's diet.

Feeding Schedule

Frequency tracks with age. Growing juveniles generally eat every day, while settled adults do well on a feeding every one to two days. A typical sitting is two to four appropriately sized insects—enough to satisfy without leaving the animal sluggish or overfed.

Timing matters for a diurnal reptile. Offer food during the warm, lit part of the day, ideally mid-morning to midday, when the anole is active and can bask to reach the body temperature it needs to digest properly. Feeding a cold animal at night works against its physiology.

Manage the feeders, not just the meal. Remove uneaten crickets after the anole has had its fill, since loose crickets can harass or bite a resting lizard overnight. Keeping an eye on body condition—ribs and tail base, energy, color—tells you whether to adjust portions up or down.

Expect some seasonal variation. Appetite can dip with shorter photoperiods, and keepers who deliberately cool and shorten the day length for a winter rest period will see feeding slow accordingly. Adjust the schedule to the animal in front of you rather than a fixed calendar.
