The brown anole is a strict insectivore with a fast metabolism and a small body, which means its nutritional needs revolve almost entirely around live, moving invertebrate prey. Unlike larger reptiles that can be sustained on a handful of feeders a few times a week, anoles burn through energy quickly and depend on a steady supply of correctly sized insects to maintain weight and activity. They will not eat plant matter, pellets, or prepared diets, so the entire feeding strategy is built around sourcing, sizing, and supplementing live feeders.

Calcium and vitamin D3 sit at the center of anole nutrition. These lizards build and maintain bone using dietary calcium, and they can only metabolize that calcium properly when D3 is present — either synthesized under UVB light or provided through supplementation. An imbalance here is the single most common cause of preventable health decline in captive anoles, so calcium support is treated as a core nutritional requirement rather than an optional extra.

Hydration is also tied to feeding behavior in a way that surprises new keepers. Anoles rarely drink from a standing dish; instead they lap water droplets from leaves and terrarium surfaces. A well-hydrated anole digests prey more efficiently and sheds cleanly, so misting routines and diet are closely linked rather than separate concerns.

What to Look For

The first rule when choosing feeder insects is size: a feeder should be no longer than the space between the anole's eyes. Prey that is too large is a genuine hazard and can cause refusal, regurgitation, or impaction, while prey that is slightly small is always the safer error. Because anoles are small and grow through distinct life stages, the appropriate feeder size shifts over time, and keepers should expect to keep more than one size of insect on hand.

Movement is the trigger that drives an anole to hunt. These lizards are visual, motion-cued predators, so healthy, active feeders elicit a far stronger feeding response than sluggish or dying ones. When evaluating feeders — whether bred at home or purchased — look for insects that are lively, intact, and free of any chemical smell or die-off in the container.

Finally, look for feeders that can be gut-loaded and dusted easily. The nutritional value of an insect is largely a reflection of what it has eaten and what coats its exterior, so feeders that take well to a quality gut-load and hold supplement powder are worth favoring. Sourcing from clean, well-managed colonies matters too, since stressed or contaminated feeders pass problems straight up the food chain.

Staple Feeder Insects

Appropriately sized crickets are the backbone of most anole diets. They are widely available, easy to gut-load, the right shape for a small lizard's mouth, and active enough to reliably trigger hunting. Keepers typically stock crickets a size or two smaller than they would for a larger reptile and remove any uneaten ones promptly, since loose crickets can stress or nibble a resting anole.

Small feeder roaches, such as appropriately sized nymphs of common feeder species, make an excellent staple alongside or in place of crickets. They are quieter, cleaner, longer-lived, and often more nutritious than crickets, and many keepers build their routine around them once they are comfortable maintaining a small colony or buying nymphs in bulk.

For hatchlings and very young anoles, flightless fruit flies are the go-to staple. Their tiny size suits a juvenile's mouth, they are easy to culture continuously, and their slow surface movement gives small lizards a manageable target. As the anole grows, fruit flies are gradually phased out in favor of pinhead and then small crickets or roach nymphs.

Supplemental & Variety Feeders

A varied diet keeps an anole interested at feeding time and fills nutritional gaps that no single feeder covers. Black soldier fly larvae are a particularly valuable rotation item because of their favorable calcium content, and small ones can be offered regularly as part of a balanced lineup. Houseflies and other small flying insects also add welcome variety and provide active aerial prey that exercises an anole's hunting instincts.

Some feeders belong strictly in the occasional category. Waxworms and similarly fatty larvae are useful as a treat or a way to add weight to a thin animal, but they are too rich to serve as a regular item and can lead to refusal of healthier prey if overused. Small mealworms fall in a similar bracket and are best offered sparingly because of their harder exoskeleton.

Tiny isopods, small silkworms, and other soft-bodied invertebrates round out a varied menu and are worth experimenting with as availability allows. The goal is a rotating selection rather than a fixed single feeder, since variety supports both nutrition and natural foraging behavior.

Calcium, Vitamins & Gut-Loading

Gut-loading is the practice of feeding your feeder insects a nutritious diet for roughly a day or two before they are offered to the anole, so that the insect's gut content becomes part of the meal. A good gut-load of leafy greens, vegetables, and commercial gut-load products dramatically raises the nutritional value of an otherwise nutrient-poor insect and is considered a non-negotiable step by experienced keepers.

Calcium dusting is layered on top of gut-loading. Feeders are lightly coated with a calcium powder before being offered, with the choice between plain calcium and calcium-with-D3 depending on whether the terrarium provides adequate UVB. Anoles kept under quality UVB lighting generally need less dietary D3, while those without strong UVB rely more heavily on supplemented D3 — a balance worth getting right, since both deficiency and excess carry risks.

A multivitamin supplement is typically rotated in on a less frequent schedule to cover trace nutrients, including vitamin A in a usable form. A common pattern is calcium at most feedings, D3-calcium and multivitamin on a reduced cadence, but the exact rhythm should be tuned to the individual setup. Over-supplementation is a real concern, so more is not better here.

Foods to Avoid

Wild-caught insects are the most important thing to avoid. Insects collected outdoors may carry pesticide residues, parasites, or pathogens, and the risk is rarely worth the convenience or cost savings. The one exception some keepers make is from land they know to be chemical-free, but even then the parasite risk argues for caution with a small, vulnerable lizard.

Certain insects are outright toxic and must never be offered. Fireflies are notoriously dangerous to reptiles and have caused fatalities, and brightly colored or strong-smelling wild insects should be treated as suspect by default. Hard-shelled beetles and oversized prey also belong on the avoid list because of choking and impaction risk.

Beyond specific insects, avoid the habit of feeding only fatty treat feeders or only a single insect type. A monotonous or overly rich diet creates slow nutritional problems even when each individual feeding seems fine, and it can make an anole reluctant to accept the healthier staples it actually needs.

Feeding Schedule

Feeding frequency tracks the anole's life stage. Growing juveniles are typically fed small prey every day to fuel rapid development, while healthy adults do well on a feeding every other day or roughly every two to three days. Watching body condition is more reliable than any fixed rule — a well-conditioned anole is lean and alert, neither bony nor visibly bloated.

Portion size is modest. A few appropriately sized insects per feeding is usually enough for an adult, offered in a way that lets the lizard hunt rather than simply find food sitting in a dish. Uneaten feeders should be removed so they do not stress the anole or foul the enclosure, and feeding response is a useful daily health indicator.

Hydration is woven into the daily rhythm. Misting once or twice a day produces the droplets anoles drink from and keeps humidity in range, and many keepers time at least one misting near feeding so the animal is active and engaged. Adjust the whole schedule seasonally and to the individual, since temperature and activity levels shift appetite.
