The American Bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) is the largest frog native to North America, and its enclosure must reflect both its adult size and its semi-aquatic lifestyle. In the wild, bullfrogs inhabit the margins of ponds, lakes, marshes, and slow-moving streams, spending roughly equal time in water and on adjacent land. A captive setup that fails to provide both a substantial water area and a well-designed terrestrial zone will produce a stressed, unhealthy animal regardless of how well other husbandry parameters are managed.
A single adult American Bullfrog requires a minimum enclosure footprint of 40 gallons, though 55 to 75 gallons is strongly recommended. Floor space matters far more than height for this species, as bullfrogs are ground-dwelling ambush predators that rarely climb. A standard long-format aquarium or a front-opening terrarium provides the horizontal real estate the frog needs to move freely between water and land. For keepers housing more than one bullfrog, which is only advisable if the animals are similar in size, each additional frog requires a proportional increase in both water volume and land area to prevent territorial stress and cannibalistic behavior.
The enclosure must be escape-proof. American Bullfrogs are remarkably powerful jumpers capable of clearing significant heights from a standing start, and they will exploit any gap in a screen lid or any loose-fitting cover. A tight-fitting, ventilated lid is essential, and it must be secured with clips or latches rather than simply resting on the tank rim. Bullfrogs are also strong enough to displace lightweight decorations and shift substrate, so all internal structures must be stable and anchored.
Ventilation is critical in any semi-aquatic amphibian enclosure. Stagnant, humid air promotes bacterial and fungal growth on both the substrate and the frog's skin. Screen tops provide excellent airflow but can make humidity management more challenging in dry climates. A balance between ventilation and humidity retention is best achieved through a combination of a partially screened lid, a large water area that naturally elevates ambient humidity, and strategic placement of the enclosure away from drafts and direct airflow from HVAC systems.
