African fat-tailed geckos are strict insectivores. Unlike omnivorous reptiles, they derive all of their nutrition from whole live prey, which means there is no pelleted or formulated 'gecko food' that can serve as a complete diet. The quality of what you feed is therefore entirely a function of the quality of the insects you offer and how those insects are prepared before they reach the enclosure.

The single most important nutritional concept for this species is the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. Feeder insects are naturally phosphorus-heavy and calcium-poor, which over time can drive metabolic bone disease if left uncorrected. A healthy diet aims for a roughly 2:1 calcium-to-phosphorus balance in the gecko's overall intake, achieved through a combination of gut-loading the insects and dusting them with calcium powder.

Fat-tailed geckos store energy reserves in their characteristic thick tail, and a well-fed animal carries a tail nearly as wide as its body. The tail is a useful, at-a-glance condition gauge: a thin or pencil-shaped tail signals underfeeding, illness, or parasite load, while an unusually swollen abdomen alongside lethargy can indicate overfeeding or impaction. Because they are nocturnal, feeding is best timed for the evening when the animal is naturally active and its digestive system is primed by belly heat.

Hydration is part of nutrition for this species. They obtain a portion of their water from prey, but a shallow dish of fresh water should always be available, and the humid hide that supports shedding also gives the animal a reliable place to take in moisture.

What to Look For

When evaluating feeder insects, size is the first filter. A good rule of thumb is that no prey item should be longer than the width of the gecko's head, or roughly the distance between its eyes. Oversized prey is a leading cause of regurgitation and, in worst cases, impaction or choking, so it is better to err small and offer more items than to push a single large insect.

Sourcing matters as much as size. Look for insects from suppliers who maintain clean colonies and can speak to how their stock is fed and housed. Healthy feeders are active, plump, and free of mold, mites, or a foul ammonia smell. Sluggish or dead-on-arrival insects are a sign of a poorly kept colony and should be returned rather than offered.

Gut-loadability is a quality you are really buying. The best staple feeders are species that readily eat a nutritious diet in the 24 to 48 hours before feeding, effectively turning the insect into a delivery vehicle for vitamins and minerals. When comparing feeder types, favor those with a soft-to-moderate exoskeleton, since heavily chitinous insects are harder to digest and offer a poorer nutritional return.

Finally, consider how you will store and sustain the feeders between feedings. Insects that die quickly or require elaborate care can lead owners to feed nutritionally depleted prey simply because that is what survived. Choosing feeders you can realistically keep healthy is part of choosing a good diet.

Staple Feeder Insects

Crickets and dubia roaches form the backbone of a fat-tailed gecko diet, and most keepers settle on one or the other as their everyday staple. Both are widely available, gut-load well, and sit in a favorable place on the protein-to-fat spectrum for a ground-dwelling insectivore.

Dubia roaches are increasingly the preferred staple. They are quiet, do not climb smooth surfaces, cannot easily escape into a home, are long-lived, and carry more meat relative to shell than many alternatives. Their main drawbacks are a higher upfront cost and the slower breeding pace if you intend to maintain your own colony. For a single gecko, buying small batches as needed is usually the simplest approach.

Crickets remain a reliable and inexpensive staple, and their movement strongly triggers feeding responses. The trade-offs are familiar to most reptile keepers: they are noisy, prone to escape, short-lived, and can foul their holding container quickly. If crickets are your staple, plan to gut-load them promptly after purchase, since they tend to arrive nutritionally empty.

Whatever you choose as the everyday base, consistency paired with rotation works best. A staple provides the bulk of calories while occasional feeders supply variety and trace nutrients. Building the diet on a well-managed staple is far more important than chasing exotic feeders.

Variety & Occasional Feeders

Beyond the daily staple, a rotating cast of occasional feeders keeps the diet interesting and rounds out its nutritional profile. Variety also helps prevent a gecko from becoming fixated on a single prey type, a common frustration when keepers later try to switch foods.

Mealworms and superworms are convenient, easy to store, and useful as a change of pace, though their firmer exoskeleton and higher fat content mean they work better as a rotational item than a sole staple. Superworms in particular are calorie-dense and best offered in moderation to animals that already carry good tail condition.

Hornworms and silkworms are excellent soft-bodied options. They are high in moisture and well tolerated, making them helpful for slightly underweight or recovering animals, or simply as an enriching change. Their softer bodies are gentle on digestion, though hornworms grow quickly and should be offered while still appropriately sized.

Waxworms occupy a special category: they are very high in fat and function as an occasional treat rather than nutrition. A few offered now and then can help a thin animal or tempt a reluctant eater, but routine feeding leads to obesity and to geckos that refuse healthier prey. Treat them the way you would candy in a balanced diet.

Supplements

Supplementation is not optional for fat-tailed geckos; it is the mechanism that corrects the natural mineral imbalance of feeder insects. The two core products are a plain calcium powder and a calcium powder that includes vitamin D3, used on a rotating schedule, plus a multivitamin used less frequently.

Most keepers dust prey with plain calcium at the majority of feedings, alternate in a calcium-with-D3 product at a portion of feedings, and add a reptile multivitamin roughly once a week or per the product's guidance. The exact cadence depends on the supplement's potency and whether the animal receives any UVB lighting, so reading and following the specific product's instructions is essential rather than applying a generic rule.

Gut-loading complements dusting and should not be skipped in favor of it. Feeding your insects a calcium-rich, nutritious diet for a day or two before they are offered builds nutrients into the prey itself, which is gentler and more consistent than surface dusting alone. Commercial gut-load formulas exist, as do simple fresh options, and the goal is the same: a well-nourished insect.

A word of caution on over-supplementation. More is not better, particularly with fat-soluble vitamins like D3 and vitamin A, where excess can be as harmful as deficiency. The safest approach is a measured, scheduled routine with quality products rather than heavy-handed dusting at every meal.

Foods to Avoid

Wild-caught insects top the list of things to avoid. Insects collected from yards or fields may carry pesticides, herbicides, and internal parasites, any of which can sicken or kill a captive gecko. Even in a pesticide-free area, the parasite risk alone makes captive-bred feeders the far safer choice.

Certain insects are outright toxic and should never be offered. Fireflies and other bioluminescent beetles are notably dangerous and can be fatal even in tiny amounts. As a general principle, brightly colored or strong-smelling insects in the wild are often advertising that they are unpalatable or poisonous, and they have no place in a feeding routine.

Fat-tailed geckos do not eat plant matter, so fruits, vegetables, and leafy greens are not part of their diet and should not be offered as food. The only place produce belongs is inside the feeder insects as part of gut-loading. Likewise, foods intended for other pets, such as dog or cat food, are inappropriate and nutritionally wrong for an insectivorous reptile.

Finally, avoid making high-fat feeders like waxworms or pinky mice a routine item. Pinky mice in particular are sometimes suggested for breeding females or recovery, but for the average pet gecko they are unnecessary, excessively rich, and easy to misuse. When in doubt, build the diet from appropriately sized, well-gut-loaded staple insects.

Feeding Schedule

Feeding frequency tracks closely with age. Hatchlings and juveniles are growing rapidly and should be fed daily or close to it, offering as many appropriately sized insects as they will readily eat in a short feeding window. Frequent small meals support steady growth without overwhelming a small digestive system.

As a gecko approaches adulthood, the pace slows. Most adults do well fed every other day or roughly three to four times per week, with portion size guided by tail and body condition rather than a fixed count. A practical guideline is to offer a number of insects the gecko finishes within about ten to fifteen minutes, then remove any uneaten prey so loose insects do not stress or nip a resting animal.

Timing should respect the species' nocturnal nature. Evening feedings, after the enclosure has reached its warm-side temperatures, align with natural activity and give the animal warmth to digest overnight. A gecko that is too cool will not digest efficiently, which is why proper belly heat is as much a feeding tool as the insects themselves.

Ongoing monitoring closes the loop. Track the tail's fullness, overall body weight, appetite, and the regularity of droppings, and adjust frequency accordingly. A brief, voluntary fast around shedding or a seasonal slowdown is normal, but a sustained loss of appetite or condition warrants a closer look at husbandry and, if needed, a veterinarian experienced with reptiles.
