Protein quality and fat balance also require attention. Ackies are lean, athletic lizards that benefit from moderate-protein, lower-fat staple feeders supplemented by occasional higher-fat items. What to Look For

Size-appropriate prey is the first consideration. A reliable guideline is that no single feeder should exceed the width of the monitor's head. Ackies are enthusiastic feeders and will attempt oversized prey, but doing so raises the risk of regurgitation and, in rare cases, intestinal impaction. Younger animals especially should receive small, consistently sized insects rather than a few large ones.

Supplier quality directly affects the nutritional value of what you are buying. Insects from reputable breeders arrive active, well-hydrated, and free of mold, mites, or ammonia odor. A sluggish batch that is half-dead on arrival has already burned through its gut contents and will deliver far less nutrition than fresh, vigorous stock. If you cannot inspect in person, choosing suppliers with clear return policies and colony-management transparency is worth the slight premium.

Gut-load receptivity separates a good staple feeder from a mediocre one. The best feeders are species that will eagerly consume a nutrient-dense diet in the 24 to 48 hours before being offered to your monitor. This transforms the insect into a mineral and vitamin delivery system, a process far more effective than surface dusting alone. When comparing feeder types, prioritize those known to gut-load readily and carry a moderate exoskeleton.

Practical storage and longevity matter as well. Insects that die quickly or require elaborate housing setups often end up being fed in a nutritionally depleted state simply because they did not survive long enough to be properly prepared. Choose feeders you can realistically maintain in good condition between purchase and feeding day.

Staple Feeder Insects

Dubia roaches are widely regarded as the gold-standard staple for Ackie Monitors. They carry a favorable protein-to-fat ratio, gut-load exceptionally well, have a moderate exoskeleton that is easily digested, and are long-lived in captivity. Their inability to climb smooth surfaces or fly makes escape virtually impossible, and they produce no noise. For a single Ackie, purchasing small batches biweekly is generally more practical than maintaining a breeding colony, though keepers with multiple monitors often find a colony cost-effective over time.

Crickets remain a proven and economical staple. Their rapid movement triggers strong prey-drive responses in Ackies, which is both enriching and ensures the animal gets exercise during feeding. The trade-offs are well known: crickets are noisy, short-lived, escape-prone, and foul their containers quickly. Buying only what you need for a few days and gut-loading immediately upon arrival mitigates most of these issues.

Black soldier fly larvae have gained popularity as a supplemental staple because of their naturally high calcium content, which reduces (though does not eliminate) the need for calcium dusting at those particular feedings. They are easy to store, slow-moving, and well accepted by most Ackies. Their relatively high fat content means they work best as part of a rotation rather than the sole daily feeder.

Whichever insect forms the dietary backbone, consistency is more valuable than novelty. A well-managed staple that is reliably gut-loaded and dusted will outperform a rotating cast of poorly prepared alternatives. Build the foundation first, then layer in variety.

Variety and Occasional Feeders

Rotating supplemental feeders into the diet prevents nutritional gaps and keeps feeding sessions stimulating for an intelligent species that benefits from dietary novelty. Ackies that eat only one prey type for extended periods sometimes develop fixation and refuse alternatives, making early and consistent variety a form of insurance.

Mealworms and superworms are convenient rotational feeders with long shelf lives and minimal care requirements. Their harder chitin means they should not dominate the diet, but offered a few times a week alongside softer staples, they contribute useful trace minerals and encourage the monitor to process different textures. Superworms are calorie-dense and best reserved for animals in good body condition.

Hornworms and silkworms are excellent soft-bodied options that are high in moisture and easily digested. Hornworms grow rapidly, so purchasing them small and using them promptly avoids the common problem of feeders that outgrow the appropriate prey size before they can be offered. Silkworms are somewhat more fragile to keep but are exceptionally nutritious and rarely refused.

Small whole prey items such as pinky mice or day-old quail chicks can be offered sparingly to adult Ackies, perhaps once or twice a month. These provide a burst of calcium from bone content and fat-soluble vitamins not easily replicated by insects alone. However, they are calorically dense and should never become routine. Think of them as a nutritional accent, not a staple, and avoid them entirely for juveniles whose digestive systems are not equipped for mammalian prey.

Supplements

Supplementation is non-negotiable for captive Ackie Monitors. No combination of feeder insects alone can replicate the mineral diversity the animal would encounter consuming wild prey across a varied Australian landscape, so calcium and vitamin powders bridge the gap between captive and natural nutrition.

The standard rotation involves three products: a plain calcium carbonate powder used at most feedings, a calcium-with-D3 powder used at a portion of feedings, and a broad-spectrum reptile multivitamin used once weekly or per the manufacturer's guidance. The exact cadence depends on whether the enclosure includes UVB lighting; animals with strong UVB exposure synthesize their own D3 and need less supplemental D3, while those without UVB rely on dietary D3 entirely.

Gut-loading is the other half of the supplementation equation and should not be treated as optional or redundant. Feeding your insects a calcium-rich, vegetable-based diet for 24 to 48 hours before offering them loads nutrients into the prey's tissues, which the monitor absorbs more efficiently than powder clinging to the outside of the insect. Commercial gut-load formulas work well, as do fresh vegetables like dark leafy greens, squash, and carrots.

Over-supplementation is a real risk, particularly with fat-soluble vitamins D3 and A, which accumulate in tissue and can reach toxic levels. The safest practice is a disciplined, scheduled routine using reputable products at their recommended dosages. Heavier dusting does not compensate for poor husbandry or low-quality feeders, and it introduces its own set of health problems.

Foods to Avoid

Wild-caught insects are the most dangerous dietary shortcut an Ackie keeper can take. Insects collected outdoors may carry pesticide residues, herbicide contamination, or internal parasites, any one of which can cause acute illness or chronic organ damage. Even in areas perceived as chemical-free, the parasite load alone makes wild-caught feeders an unacceptable gamble for a long-lived, high-value reptile.

Certain insect species are outright toxic. Fireflies and other bioluminescent beetles contain compounds that are lethal to reptiles even in very small quantities. As a general rule, any brightly colored or strong-smelling wild insect is advertising its unpalatability and should never be offered. If you cannot positively identify an insect as safe and captive-bred, do not use it.

Ackie Monitors are obligate carnivores with no physiological use for plant matter. Fruits, vegetables, and greens should never be placed in the enclosure as food for the monitor. The only role produce plays is inside the feeder insects as part of the gut-loading process. High-fat feeders like waxworms should be treated strictly as occasional treats, not dietary components. Pinky mice, while occasionally useful for adults, carry the same risk of overuse and should be offered infrequently and only to fully grown animals in good health.

Feeding Schedule

Juvenile Ackie Monitors grow rapidly and require daily feeding to support their development. Offer as many appropriately sized insects as the animal will consume in a focused feeding session of roughly ten to fifteen minutes, then remove uneaten prey. Juveniles benefit from multiple small offerings per day if your schedule permits, as this mimics the opportunistic foraging pattern of wild young monitors and keeps metabolic rate high during the critical growth window.

As the monitor matures toward its adult size, feeding frequency gradually decreases. Most adult Ackies thrive on feedings every other day or roughly four to five times per week, with portion sizes guided by body condition rather than a fixed insect count. A healthy adult carries a rounded tail base and well-muscled limbs without visible fat deposits along the abdomen. Adjusting portions based on these visual cues is more reliable than adhering to a rigid number.

Timing feedings to coincide with the animal's active period produces the best results. Ackies are diurnal and most alert during the mid-morning to early afternoon window, after they have had time to bask and bring their core temperature into the optimal digestive range. Feeding a cool monitor leads to sluggish digestion and increases the risk of regurgitation, so ensure basking sites are up to temperature before offering food.

Ongoing monitoring is essential. Track tail fullness, body weight if practical, appetite consistency, and the regularity and appearance of droppings. A brief appetite dip around shedding or during seasonal cooling is normal, but sustained refusal or weight loss warrants a husbandry review and, if the trend continues, examination by a reptile-experienced veterinarian.
