The most useful metric for rabbit owners is the ratio of active to resting time across a twenty-four-hour cycle. Healthy Havana rabbits are crepuscular, meaning they are most active during dawn and dusk with rest periods through the middle of the day and overnight. A sudden drop in activity during normally active periods, or the absence of the characteristic dawn burst of energy, can indicate pain, gastrointestinal distress, or the onset of illness before other symptoms become visible.

The device must be lightweight enough that the rabbit is not burdened by it — ideally under an ounce — and it must attach securely without dangling parts that could catch on enclosure features or be chewed off and ingested.
