Weight monitoring is another area where technology adds value, though it requires less sophisticated equipment. A simple digital kitchen scale or infant scale accurate to within a few grams is sufficient for tracking a Harlequin's weight. Weekly weigh-ins recorded in a spreadsheet or notes app create a trend line that reveals gradual weight loss or gain long before it becomes visually apparent. A drop of more than 10 percent of body weight over a month warrants a veterinary consultation, even if the rabbit seems otherwise healthy.
Temperature and humidity sensors placed near the enclosure provide environmental data that is directly relevant to rabbit health. Inexpensive digital hygrometer and thermometer units with wireless remote displays allow the owner to monitor conditions from another room. Setting threshold alerts — for example, a notification when the temperature exceeds 78 degrees Fahrenheit — adds a layer of safety for rabbits housed in rooms that are not continuously occupied.
