The English Angora Rabbit has nutritional demands that exceed those of most companion rabbit breeds, primarily because of its continuous wool growth cycle. A pellet formulated with a minimum of 18 percent crude fiber and between 15 and 17 percent protein provides the baseline nutrient profile this breed requires. Standard maintenance pellets designed for non-fiber breeds often fall short in protein content, which can lead to a dull, brittle coat and slower wool regrowth between harvestings. When evaluating pellet brands, look for products that list timothy hay meal or alfalfa meal as the first ingredient, and avoid formulations that rely heavily on grain by-products or fillers that provide caloric density without meaningful nutritional value.
Portion control is critical for English Angoras because their dense coat conceals body condition changes that would be visible on a short-haired breed. Most adult English Angoras in the five-to-seven-pound range do well on approximately one-quarter to one-third cup of pellets per day, adjusted based on wool cycle stage and activity level. During periods of active wool growth or following a shearing, protein demands increase and a slight uptick in pellet ration — or a temporary switch to an alfalfa-based pellet — can support keratin synthesis. Overfeeding pellets is a common mistake that leads to obesity and reduced cecotroph consumption, both of which undermine overall health.
Timothy-based pellets are generally preferred for adult English Angoras because they provide sustained fiber without the excess calcium found in alfalfa-based formulations. Elevated calcium intake over extended periods has been associated with urinary sludge and bladder stones in rabbits, a condition that is painful and potentially life-threatening. However, young English Angoras under six months and pregnant or nursing does benefit from the higher protein and calcium content of alfalfa-based pellets. Transitioning between pellet types should be done gradually over seven to ten days, mixing increasing proportions of the new pellet into the existing ration to avoid gastrointestinal upset.
Some specialty pellet lines are marketed specifically for Angora and fiber breeds, and these can be worthwhile investments. These formulations typically include elevated levels of sulfur-containing amino acids like methionine and cystine, which are direct building blocks of keratin and contribute to wool density and luster. They may also include added biotin and zinc, both of which support healthy skin and coat. While these specialty pellets carry a higher price point than general rabbit pellets, the improvement in wool quality and the reduction in coat-related health issues can more than justify the cost for serious Angora keepers.
Storage and freshness matter more than many owners realize. Pellets lose nutritional potency within three to four months of manufacture, and exposure to heat, moisture, or sunlight accelerates degradation. Purchasing pellets in quantities that will be consumed within six weeks and storing them in airtight containers in a cool, dry location preserves vitamin content and prevents mold growth. Mold contamination in pellets can produce mycotoxins that are acutely dangerous to rabbits, causing liver damage and potentially death even at low exposure levels.
