The Beveren Rabbit is a large heritage breed that typically weighs between eight and twelve pounds at maturity, and its nutritional demands reflect that substantial frame. Unlike smaller companion breeds that can thrive on modest portions, the Beveren requires a carefully calibrated diet that supports dense bone structure, a thick rollback coat, and a metabolism geared toward maintaining a robust body condition. Owners who underestimate caloric and fiber needs often find their Beverens developing gastrointestinal stasis or carrying insufficient muscle mass, both of which compromise longevity and quality of life.
The foundation of any Beveren diet is unlimited access to high-quality grass hay, which should constitute roughly eighty percent of total daily intake by volume. Timothy hay is the standard recommendation for adult Beverens, though orchard grass and meadow hay offer acceptable alternatives that some individuals prefer. The long-strand fiber in these hays drives the continuous gut motility that rabbits depend on for survival, and it simultaneously provides the abrasive chewing action necessary to wear down continuously growing teeth. A Beveren deprived of adequate hay will develop molar spurs and cecal dysbiosis far more quickly than owners expect.
Protein requirements for the Beveren sit slightly higher than those of dwarf breeds, generally in the range of fourteen to sixteen percent for adults and sixteen to eighteen percent for growing juveniles. This protein supports the development and maintenance of the breed's characteristically muscular hindquarters and broad shoulders. Fat content in the overall diet should remain modest, between two and four percent, because Beverens are prone to accumulating visceral fat deposits that stress the liver and cardiovascular system when diets become energy-dense.
Calcium and phosphorus balance is another critical consideration unique to large rabbit breeds. The Beveren's skeletal mass demands adequate calcium during growth phases, but excess dietary calcium in adults leads to calcium sludge accumulating in the bladder, a painful condition that can progress to bladder stones requiring veterinary intervention. The ideal calcium-to-phosphorus ratio in the total diet should hover around 1.5 to 1, achieved primarily through careful selection of greens and pellets rather than through supplementation.
Vitamin and trace mineral needs round out the nutritional picture. Beverens synthesize their own vitamin C and obtain B vitamins through cecotrophy, but they rely on dietary sources for vitamin A, vitamin D, and vitamin E. Hay and leafy greens provide most of these micronutrients naturally, making supplementation unnecessary for rabbits on a well-composed diet. Owners should resist the urge to add vitamin drops to water bottles, as this practice degrades water quality and provides inconsistent dosing.
