Giant Angora rabbits have nutritional demands that set them apart from most other rabbit breeds. Their bodies continuously produce dense, fast-growing wool that draws heavily on protein, amino acid, and energy reserves. A diet that might sustain a short-coated breed will often leave a Giant Angora with dull fiber, slow regrowth after shearing, and diminished overall vitality. Understanding these elevated requirements is the first step toward building a feeding plan that keeps both the rabbit and its coat in peak condition.
Protein is the single most important macronutrient for wool-bearing rabbits. The keratin that forms each strand of Angora fiber is built from sulfur-containing amino acids, particularly methionine and cystine. When dietary protein falls below roughly sixteen percent, wool quality declines noticeably and the rabbit may begin to lose condition. Fat content matters too, though to a lesser degree; a moderate level of healthy fat supports skin integrity and helps maintain the luster of the wool.
Fiber — dietary fiber, not wool fiber — is equally critical but for a different reason. Rabbits are hindgut fermenters whose entire digestive strategy depends on a steady stream of long-strand cellulose. Without adequate crude fiber, gut motility slows, cecotrope quality drops, and the risk of gastrointestinal stasis climbs sharply. Giant Angoras are especially vulnerable because ingested wool can compound any slowdown in the digestive tract. A fiber-rich diet acts as a natural safeguard against wool block, one of the most serious health threats this breed faces.
Calcium and phosphorus ratios deserve close attention as well. Rabbits absorb all dietary calcium rather than regulating intake the way many mammals do, so excess calcium can lead to bladder sludge and urinary stones. Keeping calcium around 0.5 to 1.0 percent and phosphorus slightly lower helps maintain urinary health without shortchanging skeletal needs. Trace minerals like zinc and copper also contribute to wool strength and pigmentation in colored varieties.
