French Angora rabbits have nutritional demands that go well beyond those of non-wool breeds. Their bodies continuously produce a dense, fine wool coat that requires a steady supply of protein, amino acids, and fiber to sustain healthy growth. A diet deficient in any of these areas can lead to poor wool quality, thinning coverage, and an increased risk of wool block — a potentially life-threatening condition in which ingested fiber accumulates in the digestive tract.
Protein is the single most critical macronutrient for wool-producing rabbits. While standard rabbit diets typically contain around 14 to 16 percent crude protein, French Angoras benefit from formulations closer to 18 percent, particularly during peak wool growth periods. This elevated protein requirement supports keratin synthesis, which is the structural protein that forms each individual wool fiber. Without adequate protein, the coat may become brittle, uneven, or slow to regrow after harvesting.
Fiber intake is equally essential, though it serves a different function. Insoluble fiber from hay drives gut motility and helps prevent the dangerous buildup of ingested wool in the stomach and cecum. French Angoras groom themselves regularly and inevitably swallow loose fibers, making unlimited access to long-strand hay a non-negotiable part of their diet. The mechanical action of chewing hay also promotes healthy dental wear, which prevents the molar spurs and overgrowth common in rabbits fed primarily on pellets.
Beyond protein and fiber, French Angoras need balanced levels of calcium, phosphorus, and fat. Calcium supports skeletal health, but excess calcium can lead to bladder sludge and urinary stones. A calcium-to-phosphorus ratio between 1.5:1 and 2:1 is considered ideal. Fat content in pellets should remain moderate — around 2 to 5 percent — providing enough energy without encouraging obesity, which is a real concern in larger wool breeds that may be less active than their short-coated counterparts.
