Space & Enclosure Requirements

Mexican Red Knee Tarantulas are terrestrial spiders that spend most of their time on or near the ground. Their enclosure should prioritize floor space over height. A general guideline is that the enclosure's length and width should each be roughly two to three times the spider's leg span, which translates to approximately a ten to fifteen gallon equivalent for an adult. Taller enclosures introduce fall risk — a tarantula that climbs the side of a tall tank and drops onto hard substrate can suffer a fatal abdominal rupture.

For slings and juveniles, small acrylic containers or modified deli cups with ventilation holes are ideal. These compact enclosures make it easier for the young spider to locate prey and maintain appropriate humidity. As the tarantula grows and molts into larger instars, it should be gradually moved into proportionally larger housing. A common mistake is placing a small sling into an adult-sized enclosure, which can lead to feeding difficulties and stress.

Front-opening enclosures are strongly preferred over top-opening designs for tarantula keeping. Opening a lid from above simulates an aerial predator approach, which can trigger defensive postures, hair kicking, or bolting. Front-opening terrariums allow you to access the enclosure at the spider's level without looming over it. Many purpose-built invertebrate enclosures now feature magnetic or latch-secured front doors with built-in ventilation.

Ventilation is a critical and often underestimated element of enclosure selection. Mexican Red Knees come from semi-arid environments and do not tolerate stagnant, overly humid air. Acrylic and clear plastic enclosures have gained significant traction in the tarantula keeping community. They are lighter than glass, resistant to shattering, and available in a wider range of configurations specifically designed for terrestrial arachnids. Many acrylic enclosures feature precisely drilled ventilation holes and secure magnetic closures. The main disadvantage is that acrylic scratches more easily than glass and may develop a hazy appearance over time, though this is largely cosmetic.

Modified plastic storage containers — often called "sterilite setups" — are a practical and economical option, particularly for keepers with multiple tarantulas. By drilling or soldering ventilation holes into the sides and lid of a clear plastic bin, you can create a functional enclosure at a fraction of the cost of a commercial terrarium. These work especially well for juvenile tarantulas and can be stacked on shelving units to conserve space in a collection.

Mesh or screen-topped enclosures designed for reptiles should be used with caution for tarantulas. While screen lids provide excellent ventilation, a tarantula's tarsal claws can become caught in fine mesh, leading to lost legs or injury. Avoid substrates that pose ingestion or impaction risks. Cedar and pine shavings release aromatic oils that are toxic to invertebrates. Gravel and sand alone do not hold burrows, dry out too quickly, and provide poor cushioning in the event of a fall. Pure peat moss can become waterlogged and acidic. Vermiculite, while useful for egg incubation setups, is not appropriate as a primary substrate for a display enclosure because it does not support burrowing and compacts poorly.

Moisture management within the substrate is a balancing act. The substrate should be slightly damp at the lower layers and dry on the surface. Overwatering the entire substrate creates conditions for mold, grain mites, and fungal growth. A good practice is to pour a small amount of water into one corner of the enclosure, allowing moisture to wick through the deeper substrate layers while the surface remains dry. Hides, Décor & Furnishing

A secure hide is not optional — it is the single most important furnishing in any tarantula enclosure. Mexican Red Knees are ambush predators that rely on a sheltered retreat to feel secure. Without a proper hide, the spider may exhibit constant stress behaviors such as pacing, climbing walls, or refusing food. The hide should be opaque, snug enough that the tarantula's body touches the sides when inside, and positioned with the opening at substrate level so the spider can enter and exit without climbing.

Cork bark is the gold standard hide material for tarantula enclosures. Cork flats or half-rounds can be cut to size, propped against the enclosure wall, or partially buried in substrate to create a naturalistic burrow entrance. Cork is lightweight, rot-resistant, and provides excellent insulation. Commercially available resin hides designed for reptiles also work well, though they tend to be heavier and less customizable than cork.

Beyond the primary hide, additional furnishing should be minimal and functional. A shallow water dish is essential and should be placed on the surface away from the hide entrance. Artificial or dried plants can be added for visual appeal but should not obstruct the spider's movement paths or create climbing opportunities that increase fall risk. Rocks and wood pieces should be stable and positioned so they cannot shift or collapse onto the tarantula.

Avoid over-decorating the enclosure. Unlike display terrariums for tree frogs or geckos, a terrestrial tarantula enclosure benefits from simplicity. Excess clutter can trap feeder insects in unreachable spaces, create mold-prone pockets, and make maintenance more difficult. The spider itself will rearrange substrate and webbing around its hide to suit its preferences, and respecting that naturalistic behavior by leaving open floor space is far more beneficial than filling every corner with décor.

Temperature & Humidity Control

Mexican Red Knee Tarantulas thrive in a temperature range of approximately 70 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit. For most homes, room temperature falls within this range for much of the year, meaning supplemental heating is often unnecessary. If your ambient room temperature drops below 65 degrees regularly — common in basements or during cold winters — a low-wattage heat mat placed on one side of the enclosure exterior can provide a gentle thermal gradient. Never place a heat mat under the enclosure, as this can overheat the substrate and cook a burrowing spider.

Heat lamps and ceramic heat emitters are generally not recommended for tarantula enclosures. They produce intense, directional heat that is difficult to regulate in a small enclosure and can rapidly dehydrate the substrate and the spider. Tarantulas lack the behavioral thermoregulation repertoire of reptiles and may not move away from a dangerously hot zone. If supplemental heat is needed, thermostat-controlled heat mats or heat tape applied to the enclosure's side wall provide the safest, most consistent warming.

Humidity for Mexican Red Knees should be maintained in the range of 55 to 70 percent. This species is more tolerant of moderate dryness than many tropical tarantulas, and erring on the drier side is safer than erring on the wetter side. Maintain humidity by keeping a filled water dish in the enclosure and periodically dampening one corner of the substrate. A quality digital hygrometer placed at substrate level provides accurate readings — avoid dial-type analog hygrometers, which are notoriously unreliable.

The interplay between ventilation and humidity is crucial. An enclosure with poor ventilation will trap moisture and create stagnant conditions even at moderate humidity levels, promoting mold and bacterial growth. Conversely, an enclosure with excessive ventilation in a dry climate may require more frequent misting to maintain adequate humidity. Finding the right balance for your specific environment often requires a few weeks of monitoring and adjustment after initial setup.

Enclosure Maintenance & Multi-Spider Considerations

Routine enclosure maintenance for a Mexican Red Knee is straightforward but important. Remove uneaten prey items within 24 hours. Spot-clean any visible bolus (the dried remains of digested prey that the spider discards) as it appears. Refresh the water dish every two to three days, scrubbing it to prevent biofilm buildup. A full substrate change is typically needed only once or twice a year, depending on conditions, or whenever mold, mites, or persistent odor develops.

During a full substrate change, relocate the tarantula to a temporary holding container — a secure, ventilated deli cup or small plastic enclosure works well. Replace all substrate, clean the enclosure walls with plain water or a dilute vinegar solution, rinse thoroughly, and allow everything to dry before reassembling. Avoid using household cleaners, bleach, or chemical disinfectants that leave residues toxic to invertebrates.

Mexican Red Knee Tarantulas are strictly solitary and should never be cohoused. Tarantulas are cannibalistic and will readily kill and consume a cagemate regardless of size or sex outside of carefully supervised mating introductions. Each spider requires its own enclosure with its own hide, water dish, and maintenance schedule. There are no exceptions to this rule, and no enclosure is large enough to safely house two tarantulas together permanently.

For keepers maintaining collections of multiple tarantulas, shelving systems with standardized enclosure sizes streamline maintenance and feeding routines. Labeling each enclosure with the species, acquisition date, last molt date, and last feeding date keeps records accessible at a glance.
