While larger enclosures are acceptable, excessively large spaces can make it difficult for the spider to locate prey and may increase stress in a species that naturally spends much of its time in or near a burrow.

Height is an important safety consideration rather than an enrichment factor. Because Goliath Birdeaters are heavy-bodied spiders, a fall from even a modest height can rupture the abdomen and cause fatal injury. Modified plastic storage containers offer a practical and cost-effective alternative, particularly for keepers maintaining multiple spiders or housing juveniles that will be upgraded as they grow. Food-safe plastic bins can be drilled or melted to create ventilation holes and fitted with secure lids. The main advantages are affordability, light weight, and the ease of creating custom ventilation patterns. The trade-off is reduced visibility and a less aesthetically polished setup.

Acrylic enclosures occupy a middle ground between glass and plastic, offering better clarity than storage bins with less weight than glass. However, acrylic scratches more easily over time and can warp under prolonged exposure to the high humidity levels this species requires. Achieving this range typically requires a combination of damp substrate, periodic misting, and appropriate ventilation design. Hides, Décor & Enrichment

While Goliath Birdeaters will create their own burrows in deep substrate, providing additional hiding options adds security and reduces stress. Cork bark flats and half-rounds are the most popular hide choices because they are lightweight, naturally rot-resistant, and can be positioned flat on the substrate surface to create low-profile shelters. A large piece of cork bark leaned at a slight angle against the enclosure wall gives the spider a ready-made retreat that it can further customize by excavating underneath.

Live or artificial plants can be added for aesthetic purposes and to help maintain humidity through transpiration in the case of live plants. Hardy tropical species that tolerate low light and high moisture, such as pothos or small ferns, can survive in a Goliath Birdeater enclosure, though there is always a risk the spider will uproot or crush them during burrowing. Artificial plants made from silk or soft plastic are a maintenance-free alternative that achieves a similar visual effect without the care requirements.

Weekly maintenance typically involves a more thorough inspection of the substrate surface, cleaning and refilling the water dish, and misting the enclosure if humidity has dropped below the target range. This is also a good time to check the thermometer and hygrometer readings against the target ranges and adjust heating or ventilation as needed. Any uneaten prey that was missed during daily checks should be removed, as decomposing insects in warm, humid conditions quickly become a source of bacteria and unpleasant odors.

Full substrate changes are the most involved maintenance task and should be performed every three to four months under normal conditions. The process involves carefully relocating the spider to a secure temporary container, removing all old substrate, cleaning and disinfecting the enclosure walls and floor with a reptile-safe disinfectant, and adding fresh pre-moistened substrate. All hides, décor, and the water dish should be cleaned or replaced during this process. Avoid using household cleaners containing bleach, ammonia, or fragrances, as residues from these products can be lethal to tarantulas.

Disinfection between deep cleans can be accomplished with a diluted vinegar solution or a purpose-made terrarium cleaner.
