Space Requirements

Ghost mantises are a small species, but their enclosure still needs to follow the fundamental rule of mantis housing: the habitat must be at least three times the mantis's body length in height and twice its body length in width and depth. For an adult ghost mantis measuring around two inches, this translates to a minimum enclosure height of roughly six inches and a footprint of at least four by four inches. Vertical space is particularly critical because mantises hang upside down from the top of their enclosure to molt, and insufficient clearance during a molt can result in deformities or death.

While meeting the minimum dimensions is essential, slightly larger enclosures are generally preferable as long as the mantis can still locate its prey without difficulty. An enclosure that is too large can make it hard for the mantis to find and ambush feeder insects, leading to missed meals and weight loss. For ghost mantises, a container in the range of six to eight inches tall and five to six inches across strikes a good balance between adequate space and effective feeding.

Height is the priority dimension for any mantis enclosure. Ghost mantises spend the majority of their time perched on vertical surfaces or hanging from horizontal perches near the top of the enclosure. They are not ground-dwelling animals, so floor space is far less important than vertical climbing and hanging area. Make sure whatever container you choose provides ample overhead room with a surface the mantis can grip securely.

For nymphs, smaller containers such as deli cups or small acrylic cubes work well during the early instars. These keep the young mantis in close proximity to its food and make it easier to monitor humidity and feeding. As the mantis grows, you should upgrade the enclosure size to keep pace with its increasing body length, typically making one or two container transitions before settling into the adult habitat.

Enclosure Types

The most popular enclosure types for ghost mantises include acrylic terrariums, mesh pop-up cages, glass nano terrariums, and repurposed deli cups for nymphs. Acrylic terrariums designed specifically for mantises and other small invertebrates are widely available and come in a range of sizes with built-in ventilation panels. These are an excellent choice because they are lightweight, easy to clean, and provide clear viewing from multiple angles.

Glass nano terrariums intended for small reptiles or amphibians can also work well, provided they have adequate ventilation. Many glass enclosures have screen tops, which serve double duty as ventilation and as a gripping surface for the mantis to hang from. The downside of glass is added weight and the potential for condensation to obscure visibility in humid conditions. Front-opening glass enclosures are particularly convenient because they allow you to access the mantis without reaching in from the top, which can startle an animal that spends most of its time hanging from the ceiling.

Mesh or net cages offer superior ventilation and are useful in warm, humid climates where stagnant air and mold can be persistent problems. However, they can be difficult to maintain at the proper humidity level in drier environments because moisture escapes too quickly. They also make it harder to contain small feeder insects like fruit flies, which can slip through mesh openings. If you use a mesh enclosure, consider lining the lower portion with a clear barrier to keep feeders contained.

For young nymphs, clear plastic deli cups with ventilation holes punched in the lid are the standard starter enclosure in the mantis-keeping community. These cups are inexpensive, disposable, and perfectly sized for tiny nymphs. Use a thumbtack or heated needle to create small ventilation holes in the lid, and line the inside of the lid with a small piece of fabric or paper towel to give the nymph a surface to hang from during molts.

Substrate and Interior Setup

The substrate layer in a ghost mantis enclosure serves primarily to retain moisture and maintain humidity rather than to provide a walking surface, since the mantis will rarely spend time on the ground. Coconut fiber, sphagnum moss, and peat-based substrates are all suitable options. A layer of roughly one inch is sufficient to hold moisture without creating a waterlogged environment. Some keepers prefer paper towels for easy cleaning, though these do not hold humidity as effectively as natural substrates.

Vertical furnishings are the most important aspect of the interior setup. Ghost mantises need branches, twigs, or artificial vines to perch on while they wait in ambush for prey. Cork bark pieces, dried twigs, and plastic terrarium plants all work well. Arrange these so that the mantis has multiple perching options at different heights within the enclosure, with at least one perch positioned near the top where the mantis will likely spend most of its time.

The ghost mantis's remarkable leaf-like camouflage makes it particularly well-suited to enclosures decorated with dried leaves, leaf litter, or artificial foliage that mimics dead vegetation. Adding a few dried oak or magnolia leaves to the enclosure not only creates a naturalistic aesthetic but also gives the mantis additional surfaces to blend into, which can reduce stress. Avoid using leaves collected from areas that may have been treated with chemicals.

The ceiling or lid of the enclosure deserves as much attention as the interior. This is where the mantis will hang to molt, rest, and sometimes feed. The surface must provide reliable grip — screen mesh, fabric, or textured plastic all work. Smooth plastic lids without modification are dangerous because the mantis cannot grip them securely and may fall during a molt. If your enclosure has a smooth lid, glue a piece of mesh or window screen to the underside to create a gripping surface.

Ventilation and Airflow

Proper ventilation is one of the most critical and frequently misunderstood aspects of mantis housing. Ghost mantises need a balance of adequate humidity and fresh air circulation. An enclosure that is too sealed will trap stagnant air and promote mold, fungal growth, and bacterial blooms on the substrate and decorations. Conversely, an enclosure with too much ventilation will lose humidity rapidly and can leave the mantis dehydrated.

The ideal ventilation setup for a ghost mantis enclosure involves cross-ventilation — having ventilation openings on at least two different sides or on both the top and one side. This creates airflow through the enclosure rather than just allowing air to escape from a single point. Many purpose-built invertebrate enclosures include mesh panels on the top and one side wall specifically for this purpose.

If you are modifying a container to create a custom enclosure, use a soldering iron or heated needle to create ventilation holes. For a deli cup or small acrylic container, a cluster of small holes on the lid and a matching cluster on the upper portion of one side wall provides adequate cross-ventilation. The holes should be small enough to prevent feeder insects from escaping but large enough to allow meaningful air exchange. For fruit fly containment, holes should be no larger than about one millimeter in diameter.

Monitor your enclosure for signs of poor ventilation, including condensation that never clears from the walls, visible mold on the substrate or decorations, a musty smell when opening the enclosure, or a mantis that remains near the ventilation holes as if seeking fresh air. If you notice any of these issues, increase ventilation by adding more holes or switching to a more breathable enclosure design.

Temperature and Humidity Control

Ghost mantises thrive in a temperature range of approximately 72 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit, with a comfortable midpoint around 77 degrees. This range aligns well with typical indoor room temperatures in most homes, which is one reason ghost mantises are considered a beginner-friendly species. They do not usually require supplemental heating unless your home drops below 68 degrees regularly, such as during winter months in colder climates.

If supplemental heat is needed, a small heat mat placed on one side of the enclosure — never underneath — can provide a gentle thermal gradient. Placing the mat on the side allows the mantis to move toward or away from the heat source as needed. Heat lamps are generally too intense and drying for small invertebrate enclosures and should be avoided. Always use a thermometer inside the enclosure to verify actual temperatures rather than relying on the heat mat's built-in thermostat, which measures the mat surface temperature rather than the air inside the habitat.

Humidity should be maintained between 50 and 70 percent for ghost mantises. This is moderate compared to many tropical invertebrate species and is relatively easy to achieve with regular misting. One to two light misting sessions per day using a fine spray bottle is usually sufficient. Mist the walls and decorations rather than spraying the mantis directly, which can startle it and cause a stress response.

A small analog or digital hygrometer placed inside the enclosure is essential for monitoring humidity levels accurately. Your perception of the enclosure's humidity from the outside is unreliable, and consistently incorrect humidity can lead to failed molts, dehydration, or respiratory issues from mold exposure. Adjust your misting frequency and ventilation based on hygrometer readings rather than a fixed schedule, since ambient conditions in your home will change with the seasons.

Communal Housing Considerations

Ghost mantises are frequently described as one of the more communal mantis species, and they are indeed less aggressively cannibalistic than many others. However, the term communal is somewhat misleading. While ghost mantises can sometimes be kept together without incident, cannibalism is always a risk, particularly during and immediately after molts when one individual is vulnerable and soft-bodied while its enclosure mates are fully armed and potentially hungry.

If you choose to attempt communal housing, several conditions significantly improve the odds of success. The enclosure must be substantially larger than what a single mantis requires, with abundant visual barriers, perches, and hiding spots so that individuals can establish their own territories and avoid constant contact. All mantises in the group should be the same instar and roughly the same size, as size disparity is the single greatest predictor of cannibalism.

Feeding must be generous and frequent in communal setups. Every mantis in the enclosure should have easy access to prey, and feeding sessions should introduce enough feeder insects that all individuals can eat simultaneously. A hungry mantis is far more likely to turn on a cage mate than one that is well-fed. Remove any mantis that appears to be consistently outcompeted for food or that shows signs of aggression toward others.

For most keepers, individual housing remains the safest and most practical approach. The cost and space requirements for maintaining separate small enclosures are modest, and individual housing eliminates the risk of losing animals to cannibalism. If your goal is breeding, male and female mantises should only be introduced for mating under close supervision and separated immediately afterward. Reserve communal arrangements for experienced keepers who are comfortable accepting some level of loss.
