A general guideline is to allow at least one gallon of enclosure volume per adult roach, though colonies do well at slightly higher densities as long as ventilation, food access, and hiding spots are sufficient. A ten-gallon glass or plastic enclosure comfortably houses a starter colony of ten to fifteen adults.

Vertical space matters more than it might seem for a ground-dwelling species. Hissers are surprisingly capable climbers and will use cork bark, branches, and other vertical surfaces to spread out and reduce competition for prime resting spots. An enclosure that is at least twelve inches tall gives you room to stack climbing structures without crowding the substrate level where feeding and molting typically occur.

As colonies grow, upgrading to larger enclosures or splitting the group into multiple habitats becomes necessary. Overcrowded colonies exhibit increased aggression among males, slower growth rates in nymphs, and higher rates of incomplete molts. Monitoring population density and planning for expansion before problems appear is a key part of long-term colony management.

When choosing an enclosure size, also factor in the space occupied by furnishings, food dishes, and water sources. A ten-gallon tank that is heavily furnished may offer less usable space than a sparsely decorated fifteen-gallon alternative, so think about the effective living area rather than just the raw volume of the container.

Enclosure Types & Materials

Glass aquariums and plastic storage bins are the two most popular enclosure choices for hissing cockroach colonies, and each has clear advantages depending on your priorities. Glass aquariums offer excellent visibility, resist scratching, and are widely available in standard sizes. They pair well with screen lids and provide a stable, attractive display for keepers who want to observe their colony regularly. The primary drawback is weight—larger glass tanks are cumbersome to move and clean.

Plastic storage bins are the utilitarian choice and are favored by breeders managing multiple colonies. They are lightweight, inexpensive, stackable, and available in a wide range of sizes. Ventilation must be added manually by cutting panels from the lid or upper walls and covering them with fine mesh or aluminum screen, but this is a simple modification that most keepers can complete in under an hour with basic tools.

Smooth-walled enclosures are essential for preventing escapes. Hissing cockroaches can climb most textured surfaces, including silicone seams inside glass tanks. Applying a two-inch band of petroleum jelly or a dedicated climb-prevention product around the interior upper rim creates a barrier that even the most determined adults cannot cross. This barrier must be inspected and refreshed regularly, as dust and debris will eventually reduce its effectiveness.

Coconut fiber, often sold in compressed bricks, is the most widely recommended substrate for hissing cockroach enclosures. It holds moisture well without becoming waterlogged, resists mold when maintained correctly, and provides a naturalistic surface for burrowing and molting. A layer two to three inches deep is ideal for most setups.

Sphagnum moss can be layered on top of or mixed with coconut fiber to boost moisture retention in drier environments. It also provides additional cover for nymphs, which tend to stay close to the substrate during their early instars. Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches are nocturnal and spend the majority of daylight hours tucked into tight, dark spaces. Providing ample hiding spots is not optional—it is one of the most important aspects of enclosure design. Cork bark flats and tubes are the gold standard for hisser hides. They are lightweight, naturally rot-resistant, and their textured surface gives roaches excellent grip. Stacking cork bark vertically creates a multi-level hiding structure that maximizes the usable space in the enclosure.

Egg crate flats, the pressed cardboard trays used in egg packaging, are another popular and extremely cost-effective option. They can be stacked to create a dense, layered hiding area that accommodates dozens of roaches in a compact footprint. The main downside is that cardboard absorbs moisture and will need to be replaced periodically as it degrades, but the low cost makes this a minor inconvenience.

Driftwood, grapevine branches, and artificial plants can be added for visual interest and additional climbing surfaces. Hissers will explore any textured surface offered to them, and a more complex environment encourages natural movement patterns and reduces territorial conflicts among males. Avoid resinous or treated wood, and rinse any collected natural materials thoroughly before placing them in the enclosure.

The ratio of hides to roaches should always lean toward abundance. A colony where every individual can find a secluded resting spot during the day will be calmer, healthier, and more productive than one where roaches are forced to cluster in insufficient cover. As a rule of thumb, if you can see more than a handful of roaches during the daytime, more hides are needed.

Temperature & Humidity Control

Maintaining appropriate temperature and humidity is the single most impactful environmental factor in hissing cockroach care. These roaches originate from tropical Madagascar and thrive at temperatures between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Room temperature colonies will survive but tend to grow more slowly, breed less frequently, and show reduced activity. For optimal results, supplemental heating is recommended unless your home naturally stays within the ideal range year-round.

Under-tank heat mats designed for reptile enclosures are the most popular heating solution. Position the heat mat beneath one end of the enclosure to create a thermal gradient, allowing roaches to move between warmer and cooler zones as needed. Always use a thermostat or temperature controller with any heat mat to prevent overheating, which can be fatal. Heat tape and ceramic heat emitters are alternatives for larger or custom-built setups.

Humidity should be maintained between 60 and 80 percent for most colonies. Light misting every one to two days, combined with a moisture-retaining substrate, is usually sufficient. A hygrometer placed inside the enclosure gives you a reliable reading and takes the guesswork out of humidity management. If humidity consistently drops below 60 percent despite regular misting, consider switching to a more moisture-retentive substrate or reducing the ventilation area slightly.

Avoid placing enclosures near windows, exterior doors, or HVAC vents, where temperature swings and drafts can stress the colony. A stable, warm location away from direct sunlight—such as an interior shelf or closet—provides the most consistent environment. Hissers do not require UV lighting or a specific photoperiod, so ambient room lighting is perfectly adequate.

Cleaning & Maintenance Products

Regular enclosure maintenance keeps mold, mites, and waste accumulation in check and is essential for long-term colony health. A basic cleaning routine involves removing uneaten food every one to two days, spot-cleaning visible frass from surfaces, and performing a full substrate change every four to eight weeks depending on colony size and substrate type. During full cleanings, transfer the roaches to a temporary holding container while you wash the enclosure walls and replace the bedding.

Mild, fragrance-free dish soap diluted in warm water is the safest general cleaning agent for cockroach enclosures. Rinse all surfaces thoroughly after washing to eliminate soap residue, which can be harmful to invertebrates. Avoid bleach, ammonia-based cleaners, and any products containing essential oils or strong fragrances. If you need a stronger disinfectant for a mite outbreak or mold issue, a dilute white vinegar solution is a safer alternative.

Long-handled tongs and small scoops simplify spot-cleaning without requiring you to remove furnishings or disturb the colony. A dedicated set of cleaning tools for your invertebrate enclosures prevents cross-contamination from household chemicals. Spray bottles used for misting should also be reserved exclusively for the enclosure and filled with dechlorinated or distilled water.

Mite infestations are the most common maintenance challenge in hisser colonies and often arise from overfeeding, excessive humidity, or contaminated substrate. If mites appear, remove all substrate and organic material, clean the enclosure thoroughly, and replace everything with fresh materials. Reducing moisture levels slightly and removing uneaten food more promptly will usually prevent recurrence.
