This remains an area of limited research, so any supplementation should be done sparingly and cautiously.

Monitor your insects for signs of dehydration, which can include shriveled body segments, reluctance to move, and difficulty molting. If these symptoms appear, increase misting frequency and verify that the foliage in the enclosure is fresh and properly hydrated.

Foods to Avoid

While leaf insects are selective feeders that will typically refuse unsuitable plants on their own, it is still important to know which types of foliage to keep out of the enclosure entirely. Plants in the nightshade family, including tomato, potato, and pepper plants, contain alkaloids that are toxic to most invertebrates. Similarly, plants with milky or sticky sap, such as euphorbia or milkweed, should be avoided.

Ornamental houseplants are another category to approach with extreme caution. Many popular houseplants, including dieffenbachia, philodendron, and pothos, contain calcium oxalate crystals or other compounds that are harmful to insects. Even if a leaf insect would not naturally feed on these plants, placing them in the enclosure for decoration creates an unnecessary risk, especially for young nymphs that may sample unfamiliar surfaces.

Herbs and aromatic plants such as lavender, mint, rosemary, and basil are generally not accepted by leaf insects and may contain volatile oils that irritate their respiratory systems in an enclosed space. Coniferous foliage like pine, spruce, and cedar should also be strictly avoided due to the resins and terpenes they contain.

Finally, never offer commercially grown salad greens, fruit, or vegetables as substitutes for proper food plants. Leaf insects are not generalist herbivores, and these items do not meet their nutritional needs even if occasionally nibbled. Stick to documented, species-appropriate foliage at all times.

Feeding Schedule & Monitoring

Leaf insects do not require a rigid feeding schedule in the way that vertebrate pets do, but they do require a consistent supply of fresh foliage at all times.
