Shell availability is arguably the single most important accessory category for Ecuadorian hermit crabs. These crabs depend on salvaged gastropod shells for protection, and they change shells multiple times throughout their lives as they grow. A colony without an adequate supply of properly sized spare shells will experience shell fights, stress-related illness, and potentially fatal evictions where a stronger crab forces a weaker one out of its shell.

The Ecuadorian species has a strong preference for shells with round, D-shaped openings rather than elongated or slit-shaped ones. Turbo shells, moon snail shells, and certain nerite shells are consistently favored. When stocking a shell shop — a dedicated area in the enclosure where spare shells are displayed — offer at least three to five shells per crab in sizes slightly larger than each crab's current shell. Including a few shells that seem too large is wise, as crabs often grow into them after a molt.

All shells introduced to the enclosure must be cleaned and sterilized first. Boiling in dechlorinated water for five minutes kills any parasites or bacteria that may be present, particularly in shells sourced from beaches or secondhand sellers. Painted shells should never be used — the paint chips and flakes as the crab manipulates the shell, and many paint formulations contain toxins that leach into the humid environment.

Arranging the shell shop in a visible, easily accessible location encourages crabs to browse and try on new shells. Many keepers place the shells in a shallow dish or on a flat piece of slate near the food station, where crabs naturally congregate during active hours. Observing which shells are inspected and tried on helps keepers learn their colony's preferences and stock accordingly over time.

Water Preparation Supplies

Maintaining safe water is a daily responsibility, and the right supplies make it efficient and reliable. A high-quality dechlorinator that neutralizes both chlorine and chloramine is the most critical single purchase for any hermit crab keeper. Municipal water treatment varies by region, and many systems have shifted to chloramine, which does not dissipate on its own the way free chlorine does. A dechlorinator that handles both compounds eliminates any guesswork.

Marine aquarium salt mix is required for preparing the saltwater pool. This product is specifically formulated to replicate the mineral composition of natural seawater and is fundamentally different from table salt, aquarium salt, or rock salt. None of those substitutes provide the correct balance of trace minerals, and several contain additives that are harmful to crustaceans. A single container of marine salt mix lasts most keepers several months, as the volumes required for hermit crab pools are small.

Measuring salinity accurately requires either a refractometer or a floating hydrometer. A refractometer is the more precise instrument and is preferred by experienced keepers, but a quality hydrometer is adequate for most setups. The target specific gravity for hermit crab saltwater is typically between 1.021 and 1.025, matching natural ocean water. Consistent salinity is more important than hitting an exact number, so the same mixing ratio should be used every time.

Dedicated mixing and storage containers keep the process clean and organized. A food-grade plastic jug used exclusively for dechlorinated freshwater and a second jug for pre-mixed saltwater allow the keeper to prepare water in advance and have it ready for quick changes. Labeling each container clearly prevents cross-contamination and eliminates the risk of accidentally adding untreated water to the enclosure.

Food & Water Dishes

The dishes used for food and water need to meet several criteria specific to hermit crab care. They must be shallow enough for crabs to reach the contents easily, heavy enough to resist tipping, and made of non-porous, non-toxic material that can be cleaned thoroughly. Glazed ceramic dishes and glass ramekins are excellent choices that check every box. Avoid metal dishes entirely — metals can corrode in the humid, salty environment and leach harmful compounds.

Water dishes deserve special attention because they double as bathing pools. Ecuadorian hermit crabs regularly submerge themselves to replenish the water stored in their shells and to moisten their gills. The dish must be deep enough to allow full submersion but must also provide a reliable exit path. A piece of natural sponge, a ramp made of plastic craft mesh, or a few rough stones placed in the dish give crabs the traction they need to climb out safely.

Some keepers prefer natural sea sponges placed inside the freshwater dish as a secondary moisture source. The sponge wicks water upward and provides a moist surface that crabs can press their gills against without fully submerging. However, sponges must be replaced frequently — they harbor bacteria quickly in warm, humid conditions — and they should never be the only water source available.

Food dishes benefit from being slightly elevated or placed on a flat stone to keep substrate from mixing into the food. A shallow ceramic dish set on a piece of slate is a simple setup that stays clean and gives crabs a defined feeding station. Using separate dishes for dry staples, fresh offerings, and calcium supplements prevents flavor contamination and makes it easier to track which foods the colony is consuming.

Substrate & Habitat Maintenance Tools

Routine maintenance keeps the enclosure hygienic without disrupting the colony's sense of security. A small scoop or slotted spoon is essential for spot-cleaning — removing uneaten food, fecal matter, and shell fragments from the substrate surface each day. The tool should be dedicated to the crab habitat and never used for anything else to avoid introducing contaminants.

A handheld spray bottle filled with dechlorinated water is used for daily misting, which supplements ambient humidity and keeps the substrate surface damp. Look for a bottle with an adjustable nozzle that can produce a fine mist rather than a heavy stream. A coarse spray can disturb the substrate and startle crabs, while a fine mist distributes moisture evenly and settles gently onto surfaces.

Substrate mixing tools come into play during full habitat refreshes every six to twelve months. A large bucket or storage bin serves as the mixing vessel for blending sand and coconut fiber to the correct ratio and moisture level before it goes into the tank. A garden trowel or large spoon makes mixing easier, and having a backup batch of substrate pre-mixed and stored in a sealed container means the changeover can happen quickly, minimizing the time crabs spend in a temporary holding container.

Cleaning supplies for the tank walls, climbing structures, and dishes should be free of soap, detergent, and chemical cleaners. A vinegar-and-water solution is the safest option for removing calcium deposits and algae from glass walls. For stubborn buildup, a razor blade scraper designed for aquarium use works without scratching the glass. All items should be rinsed thoroughly with dechlorinated water after cleaning before being returned to the enclosure.

Lighting & Photoperiod Accessories

Hermit crabs require a consistent day-night cycle to regulate their activity patterns, molting cycles, and overall circadian rhythm. In enclosures placed in rooms with natural window light, the ambient light cycle is usually sufficient. However, enclosures in darker rooms or basements need supplemental lighting to establish a reliable twelve-hour light and twelve-hour dark cycle.

LED strip lights mounted to the underside of the tank lid or along the back wall provide gentle, even illumination without generating significant heat. This is important because overhead heat-producing lights can dry the air inside the enclosure and create temperature spikes that stress the crabs. Cool-running LEDs avoid both problems while providing enough light for plant growth if live plants are part of the habitat.

A timer is a small investment that pays for itself in consistency. Plugging the enclosure light into a simple outlet timer ensures the photoperiod remains identical every day regardless of the keeper's schedule. Inconsistent lighting — lights left on late some nights, turned on early other mornings — disrupts the crabs' internal clocks and can interfere with feeding, activity, and molting timing.

Moonlight-spectrum LEDs are an optional but rewarding accessory. These dim, blue-tinted lights simulate natural moonlight and allow keepers to observe their crabs during active nighttime hours without disturbing them. Ecuadorian hermit crabs are most active in the hours after the main lights go off, and a moonlight LED reveals the full range of their climbing, foraging, and social behaviors that are completely invisible under standard daytime lighting.

Transport & Handling Gear

There are occasions when hermit crabs need to be temporarily removed from their enclosure — during full substrate changes, veterinary visits, or enclosure upgrades. A secure, well-ventilated transport container with a layer of moist substrate and a damp sponge provides the humidity and comfort crabs need during short-term relocation. Plastic critter keepers with ventilated lids work well for this purpose and are inexpensive enough to keep on hand.

Handling hermit crabs should be kept to an absolute minimum. These are observation animals, not pets that benefit from physical interaction. When handling is necessary, the crab should be allowed to walk onto a flat hand rather than being grabbed or pulled from a surface. Forcing a crab out of a hiding spot or off a climbing structure triggers a defensive pinch response and causes significant stress. Patience during these moments prevents injury to both the crab and the keeper.

A small isolation container within the main enclosure serves a different purpose — it provides a safe space for newly arrived crabs to acclimate to the colony. New crabs should be placed in the main tank inside a mesh or perforated container for a few days so they can adjust to the humidity, temperature, and scent of their new environment before being released into the general population. This buffer period reduces the territorial aggression that can occur when unfamiliar crabs are introduced directly.

Keeping a basic first-aid reference and a few emergency supplies on hand is prudent for any invertebrate keeper. A small container of dechlorinated water, an extra bag of substrate mix, and a backup heat source stored near the enclosure can make the difference between a minor inconvenience and a crisis during power outages or equipment failures. Preparedness is the most underrated accessory in hermit crab keeping.
