Giant African Land Snails are among the largest terrestrial gastropods in the world, and their enclosure needs to reflect that size. A single adult snail requires a minimum of ten gallons of enclosure volume, and most experienced keepers recommend fifteen gallons or more to allow adequate room for movement, feeding, and burrowing. For each additional snail, add at least five gallons of space. Overcrowding leads to stress, shell damage from collisions, and competition for food and resting spots.
Height is just as important as floor space. Giant African Land Snails are surprisingly active climbers, especially at night, and they will scale the walls and lid of their enclosure regularly. An enclosure that is too shallow limits natural climbing behavior and increases the risk of falls onto hard surfaces, which can crack shells. A minimum height of twelve to fifteen inches gives the snail room to climb without the danger of a catastrophic drop to the floor.
The enclosure must have a secure, well-ventilated lid. Giant African Land Snails are strong enough to push open loosely fitting covers, and an escaped snail in a household can cause damage to walls, books, and other porous surfaces as it feeds. Mesh or perforated lids work well for ventilation, but the holes must be small enough to prevent escape — even juvenile snails can squeeze through surprisingly narrow gaps. Some keepers use a combination of a solid lid with drilled ventilation holes to balance humidity retention with airflow.
Placement of the enclosure matters as well. Direct sunlight will overheat the tank rapidly, and Giant African Land Snails are extremely sensitive to temperature spikes. A location with stable, indirect light and a consistent ambient temperature of 21 to 27 degrees Celsius is ideal. Avoid placing the enclosure near radiators, air conditioning vents, or windows that receive strong afternoon sun.
