Shetland Ponies are smaller than full-sized horses, but they are active, social animals that need significantly more space than their compact stature might suggest. A single Shetland requires a minimum of half an acre of turnout area for daily exercise and grazing, though a full acre or more is preferable to support both physical activity and pasture rotation. Overcrowding a small paddock leads to rapid pasture degradation, parasite concentration in the soil, and behavioral problems stemming from boredom and confinement stress.

Shelters and Run-In Sheds

Shetland Ponies are among the hardiest equine breeds, having evolved to withstand the brutal North Atlantic winters of their native islands. Their dense double coats provide excellent insulation against cold and rain, and many Shetlands will voluntarily stand in freezing rain rather than use a shelter. Despite this toughness, providing appropriate shelter is a basic welfare requirement that protects against extreme weather, biting insects, and intense sun.

Run-in sheds are the most practical shelter option for Shetlands kept on pasture. A three-sided structure with an open front, oriented away from prevailing winds, allows ponies to come and go freely. The minimum footprint for a single Shetland is approximately 80 square feet, with an additional 40 to 60 square feet per additional pony. The opening should face south or southeast in most climates to maximize winter sun exposure while blocking northern winds. Ensure the roof extends far enough beyond the opening to prevent rain from driving into the shelter.

Standard horse fencing with wide spacing between rails or strands is often inadequate, as ponies can squeeze through, roll under, or push between openings that appear secure. The bottom rail or wire should be no higher than 12 inches from the ground, and the overall fence height should be at least 42 to 48 inches.

Board fencing with four rails set at closely spaced intervals is one of the most secure options for Shetlands. The gaps between boards should be no wider than 5 to 6 inches to prevent a pony from pushing its head through and potentially becoming trapped. While board fencing is attractive and highly visible, it requires regular maintenance — ponies love to chew wood, and untreated or poorly maintained boards will be gnawed to splinters. Mesh or no-climb wire fencing with a top rail is another excellent option that eliminates the gap problem entirely. The small grid pattern of no-climb fencing prevents ponies from stepping through or catching hooves in the mesh, which is a serious concern with standard field fencing or barbed wire. Never use barbed wire with Shetland Ponies — their thick coats can hide lacerations until infection sets in, and their tendency to test fences makes injuries far too likely. High-tensile smooth wire with proper spacing can work but requires careful installation and monitoring.

Electric fencing can be an effective psychological barrier for Shetlands, either as a standalone system or as a hot wire added to existing fencing to discourage chewing and leaning. Ponies generally learn to respect electric fencing quickly, but the system must be properly maintained with adequate voltage — at least 4,000 to 5,000 volts at the fence line. Battery or solar-powered chargers work well for remote paddocks. Inspect electric fencing regularly for shorts caused by vegetation contact, broken insulators, or grounding issues, as a fence that does not deliver a consistent charge will be tested and defeated by a determined Shetland.

Bedding and Stall Footing

Choosing the right bedding and footing for your Shetland Pony's stall or shelter affects comfort, respiratory health, hoof condition, and the ease of your daily maintenance routine. The ideal bedding absorbs moisture effectively, provides cushioning for joints, is relatively dust-free, and is safe if the pony eats some of it — because Shetlands will eat almost anything in their environment, including their bedding.

Straw is the traditional equine bedding and remains a good choice for many Shetland owners. Wheat straw is preferred over oat or barley straw because it is less palatable and ponies are less likely to consume large quantities. However, even wheat straw will be nibbled, and for ponies on restricted diets, the additional caloric intake from straw consumption can be a genuine concern. If your Shetland eats its straw bedding aggressively, consider switching to a non-edible alternative.

Wood shavings and pelleted bedding products offer excellent absorbency and are less appetizing to most ponies than straw. Kiln-dried pine or spruce shavings are the standard choice, and they compress well for easy disposal. Pelleted bedding made from compressed wood fiber breaks down into fine, highly absorbent particles when moistened and creates a very clean, easy-to-manage bed. Always verify that wood bedding products are free of black walnut, which causes acute laminitis in horses through skin contact alone.

Rubber stall mats provide a durable, cushioned base layer that reduces the amount of bedding needed and protects against the cold and hardness of concrete or compacted gravel floors. Interlocking mats are available in various thicknesses — three-quarter inch is the minimum recommended — and should be fitted tightly with no gaps where urine can pool and bacteria can breed. Over time, mats should be periodically pulled up, cleaned underneath, and reset to prevent ammonia buildup. Combined with a thin layer of shavings or pellets on top, rubber mats create a comfortable, hygienic stall environment that is efficient to maintain.

Climate Considerations

The Shetland Pony's remarkable cold tolerance is one of its defining characteristics, but climate management extends well beyond winter survival. While their double coats handle cold admirably, Shetlands can struggle significantly with heat and humidity, and housing decisions should account for the full range of weather conditions in your region. Ventilation, shade, insect protection, and moisture management are all critical elements of climate-appropriate housing.

In cold climates, the primary housing concern is wind protection rather than temperature regulation. A healthy, properly fed Shetland with its natural winter coat can tolerate temperatures well below freezing without blankets, provided it has access to windbreak shelter and dry footing. Wet cold is far more dangerous than dry cold, as a soaked coat loses its insulating properties. Shelters should be positioned and designed to keep ponies dry during driving rain and sleet, and bedding should be kept deep and dry to insulate against ground cold.

Heat management is often the overlooked challenge with Shetlands. Their dense coats, which are a survival advantage in cold weather, become a liability in warm climates. Ponies that are not body-clipped may overheat at temperatures that full-sized horses handle easily. Housing in warm regions should prioritize shade, airflow, and access to clean water. Run-in sheds should be open and well-ventilated rather than enclosed, and fans can be installed to improve air circulation during peak heat. Misting systems positioned near shelter entrances provide evaporative cooling that ponies will seek out voluntarily.

Mud management is a year-round concern that directly impacts housing quality. Shetlands are susceptible to thrush, scratches, and other moisture-related hoof and skin conditions, and standing in mud accelerates these problems. Install French drains or grading around shelters to direct water away from high-traffic areas. Gravel pads in front of shelter entrances and around water troughs prevent the worst mud accumulation. In particularly wet climates, consider geotextile fabric beneath gravel layers to prevent the gravel from sinking into the soil over time.

Multi-Pony and Mixed-Herd Housing

Shetland Ponies are inherently social animals that suffer both psychologically and physically when kept in isolation. Housing design should accommodate at least two equines, whether that means a pair of Shetlands, a Shetland with a companion pony of another breed, or a Shetland integrated into a mixed herd with full-sized horses. Each configuration brings its own housing considerations that affect space planning, feeding infrastructure, and safety.

When housing multiple Shetlands together, the primary concern is managing the social hierarchy at resource access points. Dominant ponies may guard shelters, water troughs, and hay stations, preventing subordinate animals from meeting their basic needs. Provide at least one more feeding station than the number of ponies in the group, space stations far enough apart that a dominant pony cannot control two at once, and ensure shelter openings are wide enough — or provide multiple shelters — so that no pony can be blocked from entering. Observe the herd dynamics during the first few weeks of any new grouping and adjust the layout as needed.

Mixed-herd housing with full-sized horses requires additional safety considerations. Shetlands can be injured by kicks from larger horses, particularly in confined spaces or around feeding areas. Stalls and shelters should include Shetland-only areas that larger horses cannot access, achieved through low openings or creep gates that allow the pony to pass but block larger animals. Fencing between paddocks should be sturdy enough to withstand contact from the larger horses while maintaining the tight spacing needed to contain Shetlands.

Companion animals other than equines — goats, sheep, and donkeys — are sometimes used as herdmates for solitary Shetlands. While this can be a viable solution, housing must accommodate the needs of both species. Goats require different fencing, shelter, and feeding arrangements, and their feed can be dangerous for ponies if shared. Donkeys generally integrate well with Shetlands and have similar housing needs, but they should be monitored for aggressive behavior during the introduction period. Whatever companion you choose, design the housing so that each animal can access food, water, and shelter without competition or risk of injury.
