Stall flooring affects soundness and comfort. Rubber mats over a compacted base of crushed limestone or clay provide excellent cushioning, are easy to clean, and reduce bedding consumption. Concrete alone is too hard on joints for standing horses, and plain dirt floors can develop low spots that pool urine. Placement matters as much as construction. Position the shed on high ground with good drainage so water does not pool at the entrance. Fencing & Containment

Fencing for Fox Trotters needs to balance visibility, durability, and safety. The breed's calm temperament reduces the likelihood of panicked fence-line injuries compared to hotter breeds, but no fence is truly horse-proof if the animal is motivated enough. Board fencing, typically three or four rails of hardwood on pressure-treated posts, remains one of the safest and most visible options. It is also one of the most expensive to install and maintain, as boards crack, warp, and need periodic replacement.

High-tensile polymer fencing has gained popularity as a lower-maintenance alternative. These flexible rails absorb impact rather than splintering, reducing the risk of penetrating injuries. They install on the same post spacing as traditional board fencing and are available in several colors, with white and black being the most common. The initial cost is comparable to wood, but the long-term maintenance burden is significantly lower.

Woven wire or no-climb mesh fencing works well for perimeter containment, especially when combined with a top rail or electric offset wire for visibility. The mesh pattern should be small enough that a hoof cannot pass through, typically two-by-four inches or smaller. Climate Considerations

This heritage gives the breed reasonable tolerance for a range of climates, but housing decisions should still account for local extremes. In hot climates, shade and airflow are the primary concerns. Fans mounted safely in stalls or run-in sheds can make a significant difference during peak summer, and misting systems in aisle ways help lower ambient temperature for horses brought in from turnout.

Cold weather management centers on wind protection and dry footing rather than warmth per se. A healthy Fox Trotter with a full winter coat and adequate calories can tolerate temperatures well below freezing, but wind combined with rain or sleet strips away the insulating air layer trapped in the coat and creates genuine hypothermia risk. A run-in shed that blocks wind and keeps the horse dry is more valuable than a heated barn in most winter scenarios.

Bedding depth matters in cold weather. A thick layer of straw or shavings insulates the horse from cold ground when lying down and encourages rest. In regions with hard freezes, water supply becomes a daily management challenge. Heated buckets or trough heaters prevent ice formation and encourage adequate water intake, which is critical for preventing impaction colic during winter months.

Mud management is a year-round concern in many climates but particularly during spring thaw and fall rains. Chronic exposure to mud softens hooves, promotes thrush, and creates slippery footing that can injure joints and tendons. Sacrifice areas with a base of crushed stone or geotextile fabric under gravel provide solid, drainable footing near high-traffic areas like gates, water troughs, and feeding stations.

Multi-Horse Properties

Fox Trotters are sociable horses that generally integrate well into mixed herds, but housing multiple horses still requires planning. Herd dynamics dictate that feeding and watering stations should be spaced far enough apart that a dominant horse cannot monopolize resources. A good rule of thumb is to provide one more feeding station than the number of horses in the group, placed at least thirty feet apart, so subordinate animals always have access.

Stall assignments in a shared barn should consider individual temperaments. Placing two horses that do not get along in adjacent stalls creates chronic low-grade stress for both, manifesting as weaving, cribbing, or aggression over the stall wall. Isolation facilities are an essential component of any multi-horse property. A separate stall or small paddock, ideally with its own water source, allows you to quarantine new arrivals, separate a sick horse, or provide a recovery space after veterinary procedures.
