A working or showing Hackney typically requires more digestible energy per pound of body weight than a draft breed of comparable size, and the quality of that energy matters as much as the quantity. Owners who underestimate the metabolic cost of that elevated trot often end up with a dull coat, poor muscle tone, or a horse that fatigues too quickly in the ring.
Protein requirements for the Hackney sit in the moderate-to-high range, generally between ten and fourteen percent of total diet depending on workload, age, and reproductive status. Growing Hackneys and broodmares need protein at the upper end of that window, while mature horses in light work can thrive closer to ten percent. Equally important is the amino acid profile — lysine, methionine, and threonine are limiting amino acids in most equine diets, and a feed that supplies adequate crude protein but falls short on these aminos will still leave the horse nutritionally shortchanged.
Fat and fiber play complementary roles in the Hackney diet. Fiber from quality forage should form the foundation of every meal plan, providing slow-release energy and supporting gut motility. Supplemental fat — typically added as stabilized rice bran or oil — offers a concentrated, cool energy source that can fuel performance without the excitability sometimes caused by high-starch feeds. For a breed already known for its spirited disposition, managing starch intake while maintaining energy availability is one of the most important nutritional balancing acts an owner will face.
Micronutrient balance rounds out the picture. Hackneys in regular work benefit from adequate selenium, vitamin E, and the B-vitamin complex to support muscle recovery and immune function. Calcium-to-phosphorus ratios should stay in the neighborhood of two-to-one, especially for young growing horses whose skeletal development depends on mineral equilibrium.
